Timothée Chalamet Responds to Backlash Over ‘Marty Supreme’ Press Tour Behaviour
Timothée Chalamet has been at the center of Hollywood chatter lately, thanks to his unusual press tour for the film Marty Supreme. While some of the movie’s promotional stunts, like the orange “Marty Supreme” blimp and a parody marketing meeting, have been well-received, the actor’s interviews have caused a stir online.
In one interview, Chalamet spoke highly of his performance in the film, saying it represents his best work so far. He told a reporter, “I don’t want people to take it for granted. I don’t want to take it for granted. This is really some top-level s***.” The comments quickly sparked debate on social media, with some fans viewing them as overly confident.
Chalamet also appeared on Good Morning America, where he discussed the movie’s potential success. “I want the movie to succeed. I want everything to win,” he said. He added, “The real truth is that ‘Marty Supreme,’ I feel confident to the degree that by next summer … I’m confident I know what it’s gonna be by next summer.”
Many viewers interpreted these remarks as the actor hinting at possible awards recognition, which fueled more discussion online.
Responding to the backlash, Chalamet told IndieWire that the press tour reflects the energy of the film. “This is in the spirit of Marty, and I feel like this is ultimately an original film at a time when original movies aren’t really put out,” he said.
“It’s a movie about the pursuit of a dream. I’m leaving it on the field. Whether it’s the merch or the Zoom or the media appearances, I’m trying to get this out in the biggest way possible. In the spirit of Marty Mauser.”

Despite the mixed reactions, the strategy seems to be paying off. Marty Supreme opened on just six screens on December 19 and earned $875,000 in its opening weekend. This gave the film the highest per-screen average of the year, the best in A24 history, and the strongest platform release since La La Land in 2016. The movie is scheduled for a nationwide release on Christmas Day.
