Timothée Chalamet and Matthew McConaughey recently looked back on their decade-long bond, revealing that their time on the set of Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar wasn’t just about high-concept physics and emotional reunions.

During a special Variety and CNN town hall at the University of Texas at Austin on February 21, 2026, Chalamet recounted a particularly pungent parting gift he received from his on-screen father.

The 30-year-old actor shared that on his final day of filming the 2014 sci-fi epic, he returned to his trailer to find a disturbing surprise. I went into my trailer and there was a huge turd in my toilet. I felt so disrespected, Chalamet told the live audience of students, recalling how he initially suspected the production crew.

I went around to all the grips, these big guys, and I said, “Hey, one of you let it loose in my trailer.” They said no, he continued, painting a picture of his genuine confusion. It wasn’t until he approached the director himself that the culprit was unmasked.

I went up to Nolan, and he pointed to Matthew, and Matthew had this devilish grin on his face, Chalamet said, turning to McConaughey. When the young actor asked why he would do such a thing, McConaughey reportedly offered a classic, cryptic explanation: In Texas, it’s a coming of age, baby.

McConaughey, true to his “Alright, Alright, Alright” persona, didn’t deny the story, simply referring to the deposit as a souvenir. The anecdote served as a hilarious reminder of the “wild west” energy McConaughey brings to his sets, even on a production as serious as a Christopher Nolan masterpiece.

Since their time together in the wormhole, both actors have reached the pinnacle of Hollywood success, with 2026 proving to be a massive year for both. Chalamet is currently celebrating his third Oscar nomination, this time for his role in the A24 sports drama Marty Supreme, which premiered to rave reviews in late 2025.

Fans of the actor won’t have to wait long for his next big-screen appearance, as he is set to lead the cast of Dune: Part Three on December 18. The film, which adapts Dune Messiah, will feature an ensemble including Zendaya, Florence Pugh, and Robert Pattinson, serving as the grand finale to Denis Villeneuve’s trilogy.

Matthew McConaughey is also in the midst of a major career resurgence with the upcoming release of The Rivals of Amziah King. The crime thriller, directed by Andrew Patterson and co-starring Kurt Russell and Cole Sprouse, currently holds a near-perfect 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and is scheduled for a theatrical launch on August 21.

McConaughey has also recently wrapped production on The Lost Bus, an Apple TV+ original film where he stars alongside America Ferrera. Between his teaching duties at UT Austin and his growing slate of prestige thrillers, the 56-year-old Oscar winner is proving that he is far more than just a legendary prankster.

While Chalamet may have felt “disrespected” by that trailer surprise a decade ago, the two remain incredibly close, with Chalamet often seeking advice from his former co-star. Their recent reunion in Austin underscored a rare Hollywood mentorship that survived one of the most bizarre “coming of age” rituals ever recorded on a film set.
