Tom Holland’s Spider-Man appears to be getting a surprising connection to Tobey Maguire’s version of the character in the upcoming Marvel movie Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

A new piece of footage from the film shows Holland’s Peter Parker swinging through New York City, saying, “Organic webs, Peter 2 had them. He was cool; you’re cool.”

Peter will develop organic webbing in Brand New Day, a power most famously associated with Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man. Maguire’s version of Peter Parker had the ability to produce webs directly from his wrists, unlike Holland’s Spider-Man, who has always relied on technology to create his web fluid.

The possible reference is especially interesting because Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man already became part of the MCU story through Spider-Man: No Way Home. In that film, Holland’s Peter and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man were surprised to learn that Maguire’s version did not need web shooters at all.

While the new footage has not officially confirmed that Peter’s powers are changing, it appears to match previous hints about a major transformation in the upcoming movie. Earlier promotional material showed Holland’s Spider-Man still using mechanical web shooters, suggesting that the organic webbing could appear later in the story after something causes his body to change.

Marvel has been building mystery around Peter Parker’s evolution throughout the marketing campaign. According to the film’s official story details, Peter is now completely alone after Doctor Strange’s spell in Spider-Man: No Way Home erased everyone’s memory of him. While protecting New York by himself, Peter faces a new threat that causes unexpected changes to his abilities.

The trailer also teases that Peter’s transformation could be dangerous. Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner appears in the film and warns Peter about the risks of his DNA changing, leading fans to believe the movie may explore a more experimental and darker side of Spider-Man’s powers.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be the fourth solo MCU Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland. The film is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously worked on Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Holland returns as Peter Parker, with Zendaya coming back as MJ and Jacob Batalon returning as Ned Leeds.

The movie will also expand Spider-Man’s world with several major characters. Jon Bernthal will return as Frank Castle, also known as the Punisher, while Mark Ruffalo will appear as Bruce Banner. Michael Mando is also back as Mac Gargan, the villain known as Scorpion, and Marvin Jones III will play Lonnie Lincoln, also known as Tombstone.

With new villains, returning characters, and possible changes to Peter’s powers, Brand New Day looks set to take Holland’s Spider-Man in a new direction. The possible nod to Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man has only increased fan excitement, especially for viewers who grew up with multiple versions of the wall-crawler.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to hit theaters on July 31, 2026, as part of Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As more footage arrives, fans will likely continue searching for clues about Peter Parker’s next evolution.
