Tom Cruise has confirmed that a third Top Gun movie is officially in development. The actor revealed this during an interview with Australia’s Today, saying that the long-awaited sequel is being discussed.

Cruise shared, “Yeah, we’re thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what’s possible.” He added that it took him 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick, so planning the next chapter is a careful process.

Top Gun 3 isn’t the only sequel on Cruise’s mind. He hinted that a follow-up to his sports drama Days of Thunder is also being considered. He said, “We’re discussing [sequels to] Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick. There’s numerous other films that we’re actively working on right now.”

Paramount first confirmed the development of Top Gun 3 back in 2023, with Cruise returning as test pilot and flight instructor Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. The sequel will likely see the return of Maverick co-stars Glen Powell, Miles Teller, and Jay Ellis, though no production timeline has been announced.

The success of Top Gun: Maverick, which earned $1.496 billion globally and received critical acclaim, makes the anticipation for the third installment even higher. Fans will just have to wait to see what’s next for Maverick and the Top Gun crew!
