Tom Cruise Halted ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ Filming After Landing Helicopter on Set

A surprising moment happened during the filming of Star Wars: Starfighter when Tom Cruise suddenly arrived by helicopter and stopped production.

He said the crew was in the middle of shooting when they heard a helicopter above them. “Tom Cruise flew his helicopter onto set. And they were just shooting and they heard a helicopter, they had to cut… and it was Tom Cruise,” Gosling said.

Cruise didn’t just visit. He got involved right away. “He lands in the middle of set, he takes a camera and just starts shooting an action scene,” Gosling added. Gosling also said he missed the whole moment because it happened on his day off.

“I wasn’t there .. [my] one day off. Shawn sends me a picture of him and Tom Cruise … there’s like a shot of him in the mud shooting Flynn … I don’t know why he waited until the one day I wasn’t there. I hope that was an accident,” he joked.

The podcast appearance is not the only time Cruise’s visit was mentioned. Director Shawn Levy also spoke about it in an interview with The New York Times. According to Levy, Cruise showed up on set in November and ended up helping film a scene.

Levy explained that Cruise originally planned to just watch. But things changed quickly when the team was preparing a lightsaber fight in water.

“Last week Steven Spielberg was here,” Levy said. “And now Tom Cruise is wielding a camera, ruining his very nice shoes.”Cruise then joined in and filmed part of the scene himself. “Now when you see the movie, you’ll know that part of it was shot by Tom,” Levy said. “I mean, how cool is that?”

The film is directed by Levy and written by Jonathan Tropper. It is part of the Star Wars series and takes place after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Along with Gosling, the cast includes actors like Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams.

Work on the movie started a few years ago. The project faced delays during the 2023 writers’ strike but later moved forward. Filming took place in the United Kingdom and Italy. The movie is expected to arrive in theaters in May 2027.
