That project is ‘Digger,’ Cruise’s first collaboration with Oscar-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, arriving in theaters on October 2. Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, described in the film’s marketing as the most powerful man in the world, who embarks on a frantic mission to convince humanity he’s its savior after triggering a global catastrophe of his own making.

Cruise has spoken about wanting to work with Iñárritu for decades, and the partnership finally came together after the director approached him with the script and read it to him line by line over several days, a process Cruise reportedly requests from all his collaborators. Iñárritu echoed that sense of significance from his own side of the collaboration. Speaking in a prerecorded video at a recent promotional event, the director described Cruise’s transformation into the role as astonishing, adding that both he and Cruise understood what it meant to carry an entire career into a single defining moment like this one.
‘Digger’ brings together a genuinely stacked ensemble alongside Cruise, including Sandra Hüller, Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Jesse Plemons, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Emma D’Arcy. The film is produced by Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, with a screenplay credited to Iñárritu alongside Alexander Dinelaris, Nicolás Giacobone, and Sabina Berman.
The timing of Cruise’s GQ spread also lines up with a broader moment of recognition for the actor, who received an honorary Oscar at the Governor’s Awards, presented directly by Iñárritu himself ahead of their collaboration hitting theaters. That honor, paired with early buzz suggesting ‘Digger’ could position Cruise for his first competitive Academy Award nomination, has made this fall’s press rollout feel higher-stakes than a typical Cruise release cycle.
