Tom Holland Confirms His Next Movie After ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and We Definitely Approve It
It has been a massive year for Tom Holland. He entered the Nolanverse and earned rave reviews for his performance in Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey,’ he is about to return to screens in Destin Daniel Cretton’s ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ and somewhere in between he starred in a Pepsi ad with Lionel Messi and married his longtime partner Zendaya.
With a run like that, most actors would take a breather. Holland, though, is already looking ahead. Fresh off promoting ‘Brand New Day,’ the 30 year old actor is gearing up for a role that has been years in the making, and he is not wasting any time.
During a recent appearance on Good Morning America, Holland confirmed that his next film will finally be his long gestating Fred Astaire biopic from ‘Paddington’ and ‘Wonka’ director Paul King. “We have Fred Astaire next, is what we’re planning on doing,” Holland said, adding that once his current press tour wraps he is diving straight back into the dance studio.
The project has been in the works since Holland first revealed his casting back in 2021. Sony’s film will chart the life and career of Astaire alongside his sister Adele Astaire, following the pair from a modest midwestern vaudeville act to Broadway and the West End before Fred’s star rose on his own in Hollywood. The script comes from ‘Fosse/Verdon’ and ‘Tick, Tick… BOOM!’ writer Steven Levenson.
Holland has already begun preparing for the physically demanding role, admitting that his first rehearsals left him thrilled and more than a little intimidated by the amount of work still ahead. He has also expressed a desire to perform all of the dancing himself without doubles and film the routines in single unbroken takes, the same way Astaire once did.
Not everyone is on board with the project moving forward. The Astaire estate has objected to the biopic, saying Fred was “explicit in his Will” about not wanting his story dramatized on screen, and reportedly threatened legal action. Despite that pushback, the film appears to be moving ahead regardless, with Holland telling GQ that production is now targeting a January 2027 shoot.
Astaire starred in 30 musicals between 1932 and 1957, ten of them alongside his legendary dance partner Ginger Rogers. King, meanwhile, has built a reputation for pairing whimsy with technical precision, and his last outing, ‘Wonka,’ turned into a worldwide box office hit.
