Tom Holland Is Reportedly Giving His Best Spider-Man Performance Yet in ‘Brand New Day,’ According to First Reactions

Tom Holland has spent nearly a decade growing up on screen as Peter Parker, evolving from a wide-eyed teenager sneaking around in a homemade suit to a hero shouldering real emotional weight. With ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ now unveiled to press and premiere audiences, that evolution appears to have reached a new peak.

The film picks up roughly four years after the events that left Peter completely forgotten by everyone he loves, forcing him to dedicate himself entirely to protecting New York City with no family, friends, or support network to lean on. That isolation, according to early reactions, is exactly what’s fueling the most talked-about element of the film.

Across nearly every early reaction, one detail keeps repeating: Holland is delivering the best performance of his Spider-Man career. Reactions describe him being universally praised for the role, with critics pointing to a more grounded, back-to-basics approach that gives him room to find new depths in what was already a pitch-perfect performance.

Gone is the teenage uncertainty that defined his earlier films, replaced by a more mature hero carrying real emotional weight, as Holland reportedly balances vulnerability with determination to create a Peter Parker who feels more human than ever before. It’s a shift several critics have connected to the character finally being allowed to sit with genuine consequences.

One widely shared reaction called it Holland’s best performance as Peter Parker and the best ‘Spider-Man’ movie since Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man 2’, praising the film for taking a more cerebral approach than the crowd-pleasing ‘No Way Home’. Another reviewer went even further, saying Holland has never been better and pointing to the chemistry between Spider-Man and Jon Bernthal’s Punisher as a highlight of the film.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton, stepping in for Jon Watts, is getting plenty of credit for that shift in tone as well. His approach has been described as delivering a grounded Spider-Man tale that returns to the city roots of the character, allowing Holland to finally lean into the sarcasm, angst, and emotional messiness that reactions say defined Stan Lee’s original vision for Peter Parker.

It isn’t just critics buying in, either. Reactions have praised the way Tom Holland, Zendaya, and the rest of the cast confidently reveal new shades of their characters, with a few welcome surprises along the way. Zendaya’s MJ, Jacob Batalon’s Ned Leeds, and newcomer Sadie Sink have all drawn their own share of praise, but Holland’s performance keeps landing at the center of the conversation.

Some of that enthusiasm reportedly extends behind the scenes as well. Producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal have previously discussed how strongly an early cut of the film landed internally, with Pascal recalling that she and Feige stood up and cheered, something she noted had never happened for her on a ‘Spider-Man’ project before.

Of course, early reactions historically run warmer than full reviews once embargoes officially lift, and a handful of critics have noted a busier script and a divisive ending as points worth watching. Still, the consistency of the praise directed specifically at Holland suggests this performance may end up defining how the film is remembered.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ swings into theaters on July 31, giving audiences their own chance to weigh in on whether this really is Holland’s finest turn as the wall-crawler yet.
