Tom Holland Just Imagined a Wild Alternate Universe Where Timothée Chalamet Is Spider-Man

Spider-Man casting debates never really go away, even a decade after the role has been settled. Fans still love to play the “what if” game, tossing out actors who could have swung into the red-and-blue suit in another timeline.

Tom Holland has been synonymous with Peter Parker since 2016, but that hasn’t stopped him from indulging fans’ curiosity about the roads not taken. With ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ now hitting theaters, Holland has been making the media rounds, and one particular hypothetical caught fire online.

During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Holland was asked to imagine a reality in which Timothée Chalamet had landed the role of Spider-Man instead of him. Rather than brushing off the question, the actor leaned in and gave a genuinely thoughtful answer.

“I think he would make a great Spider-Man,” Holland said of Chalamet. “I think he would really bring a lot of emotion. He would be a more brooding version of the character, which might be kind of interesting.”

Holland didn’t stop there. He then flipped the scenario around, joking about what his own career might have looked like if the two actors had swapped franchises entirely, landing him in Chalamet’s biggest role instead.

“And maybe I got ‘Dune,'” Holland laughed, before painting a chaotic picture of what that version of the sci-fi epic might have looked like. “‘Dune’ would be about a blundering idiot running through the sand.”

The swap makes for an amusing thought experiment given how different the two performers’ careers have played out. Chalamet has built a reputation on prestige dramas and the ‘Dune’ franchise, while Holland has spent the better part of a decade anchoring one of Sony and Marvel’s biggest tentpole franchises.

It is worth noting that this kind of casting speculation has followed Holland before, with fans regularly floating actors who could have taken on Spider-Man in an alternate universe. What makes Holland’s response notable is how seriously he engaged with the idea instead of deflecting it entirely.

The timing of the comments lines up with a broader press cycle for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ which marks a new chapter for Holland’s Peter Parker following the emotional fallout of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home.’ The film reunites Holland with Zendaya and Jacob Batalon, while bringing in new faces like Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, and Mark Ruffalo.

Holland has also used this press tour to reflect on his Spider-Man journey more broadly, discussing everything from his eventual exit from the role to how the character’s biggest emotional beats came together on set. He has spoken about a long-term plan already in place for passing the Spider-Man mantle to a future actor, hinting that his tenure as Peter Parker will not last forever. The Chalamet comments fit into that larger pattern of an actor looking back on nearly a decade in the suit while still finding room for playful hypotheticals.

The exchange also plays into long-running online debates about which other actors could have plausibly played Peter Parker across the years, a conversation that tends to resurface whenever Holland does extended press for a new Spider-Man release.

Whether or not Chalamet would have actually said yes to a superhero franchise remains its own hypothetical, but Holland’s brief detour into an alternate Marvel universe gave fans plenty to chew on. It’s the kind of casting daydream that could only exist because Holland’s own take on the wall-crawler has been so firmly cemented in pop culture.
