On paper, a bright red-and-blue web-slinger and a gun-toting vigilante shouldn’t make for a natural comedy duo. Yet the on-set chemistry between Tom Holland and Jon Bernthal has become one of the most entertaining side stories to come out of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’. Fans keep going back for more of their behind-the-scenes antics.

The two were friends long before the MCU brought them together. They worked together on ‘Pilgrimage’ and later both took roles in Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’. Bernthal has said they even helped each other put together their audition tapes for Spider-Man and Punisher.

That history makes the latest bit of set footage feel even more fitting. A short clip circulating online shows Holland in the full Spider-Man suit, leaning over the hood of a heavily armored vehicle with a blue screen behind him and crew members gathered around. The footage has been framed online as Holland pushing Bernthal to the edge, and it has quickly turned into a fan favorite.

The vehicle in the clip is a familiar sight to anyone who followed the shoot. Filming took place in Scotland, with Glasgow’s city center standing in for the streets of New York City. Unofficial set photos showed Spider-Man landing on an armored tank, which many viewers assumed was tied to Bernthal’s Punisher.

Sony’s own day-one vignette leaned into the same chaos. The official video showed Holland suiting up and shooting a scene on top of what appeared to be a tank careening down the street. At the time, one rumor held that Bernthal’s Frank Castle was driving the tank during the chase sequence.

Holland has never hidden how he feels about his co-star. In an exclusive clip from the film’s home release shared with Yahoo, Holland called Bernthal one of the greatest and nicest people he has ever met in this business. That warmth explains why the two can push each other’s buttons without anything coming off as mean.

The footage also revisits how it all started. Holland recalls being in the fourth or fifth round of self-tapes for Spider-Man in the spring of 2015, around the time Bernthal was called to audition for the Punisher role in Netflix’s ‘Daredevil.’ Bernthal has also said he encouraged Holland to include a stunt in his audition.

The set antics are surfacing now because the film has reached home viewers. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is available digitally, with 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD editions due on December 15. The bonus features include ‘Goofs, Gaffes and Gags’ and ‘Webs, Wires and Runaway Tanks.’

One of the extras is a featurette called ‘Peter and The Punisher.’ That featurette is the source of a new behind-the-scenes clip focused on the Holland and Bernthal pairing. The gag reel includes messed-up takes, production mishaps and a funny exchange between Holland and Bernthal. A bloopers compilation on YouTube pitches Bernthal as repeatedly losing his patience.

The playful mood stands in contrast to the story on screen. The film finds Peter fighting crime full-time in a world that no longer remembers him. In one of its most emotional beats, Frank Castle gravely wounds Peter with a shot and then carries him to a hospital.

Holland has joked about that darker material too. In a clip shared on October 6, he laughs off filming the near-death scene by saying it’s fine because he has already made 4 movies. That sense of humor seems to be a big part of how the cast got through a heavy shoot.

The film itself has done very well. It was reported to have passed $500 million in the US faster than any movie in history. With it, Holland became the first actor to star in 4 live-action solo Spider-Man films.

A big part of that success comes from a cast that clearly enjoyed the work, and the Holland and Bernthal dynamic is a prime example.

What do you think of Tom Holland and Jon Bernthal’s hilarious behind-the-scenes chemistry on Spider-Man: Brand New Day?
