Tom Holland Reveals He Already Has a Plan for Passing on the Spider-Man Mantle

Every actor who takes on an iconic role eventually has to think about what comes after, and for Tom Holland, that conversation has been building for months. With ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ marking his fourth solo outing as Peter Parker, the actor has increasingly found himself fielding questions about how long he sees himself staying in the suit.

Holland has spent nearly a decade turning Peter Parker into one of the most beloved corners of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, debuting in the role back in 2016’s ‘Captain America: Civil War.’ That kind of longevity naturally invites speculation about succession, especially as the actor approaches a decade in the role.

That speculation has only grown louder recently, with Holland increasingly open about wanting to help shape whoever eventually takes over the mantle. Speaking with Empire, the actor explained his hope to mentor the next Spider-Man the same way Robert Downey Jr. once guided him, saying, “For whoever’s next, whether that is a Miles Morales or a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman or something like that, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter.”

Holland made clear he doesn’t have specifics worked out yet, admitting he isn’t sure exactly what that transition would look like in practice. Still, he expressed genuine enthusiasm about eventually playing a role in passing the character forward, framing it as something he’d find deeply meaningful rather than something he’s dreading.

That sentiment echoes comments Holland made to GQ earlier this year, where he revisited an old quote about not wanting to play Spider-Man past age 30. He clarified that his real point wasn’t about quitting outright, but about eventually handing the character off, noting that the idea is something he and the studio discuss regularly.

Holland has also spoken previously about wanting to walk away from the role on a high note rather than overstaying his welcome, telling The Hollywood Reporter that there’s a certain stigma around fourth installments in most franchises. He described wanting to exit with his head held high, passing the baton to whoever gets the chance to bring the character to life next.

The Robert Downey Jr. comparison carries particular weight given how central Tony Stark’s mentorship was to Peter Parker’s own arc within the MCU. Downey’s presence helped anchor Holland’s earliest Spider-Man appearances, and losing that mentor figure in ‘Avengers: Endgame’ became one of the more emotionally resonant moments of the franchise’s Infinity Saga.

With Holland now sitting at the ten-year mark since his MCU debut, and ‘Brand New Day’ already being described as one of Peter Parker’s most personal and emotionally driven stories yet, the timing of these succession comments doesn’t feel entirely coincidental. It suggests an actor who’s thinking seriously about legacy, even while he’s still very much in the middle of building it.

For now, there’s no indication Holland is stepping away from the role anytime soon, especially with the franchise’s future stretching well beyond ‘Brand New Day.’ But his repeated willingness to discuss what comes next suggests that whenever that transition does happen, he intends to be part of shaping it rather than simply walking away.
