Tom Holland Wants Spider-Man to Team Up With This Major MCU Hero

Few comic book friendships are as beloved as the one between Peter Parker and Johnny Storm. Fans have wanted to see it in live action for years, and the rights situation always seemed to stand in the way. Now Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and Johnny Storm are back in the conversation thanks to a new interview.

The comments come from a special feature in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ #1000, an oversized milestone issue celebrating a thousand issues of the flagship series. It is scheduled for release on September 30 at $9.99. The interview pairs Holland with ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ director Destin Daniel Cretton.

In the comments, Holland says his Spider-Man should team up with Joseph Quinn’s Johnny Storm. The reality is a bit more specific. Holland was discussing costumes he would love to try in the future, and he singled out the Bombastic Bag-Man suit, saying Bleeding Cool reported that “I love his relationship with Johnny Storm.” He added that he would be eager to explore that in the future.

The Bombastic Bag-Man is a humorous temporary outfit. In the comics, Peter borrowed a Fantastic Four uniform and a paper bag mask from Johnny after ditching the black symbiote suit. It ties the two heroes together in a very literal way.

Holland also revealed how deeply he loves Brian Michael Bendis’ ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’ run. He said he has spent more than 10 years trying to get one comedic moment from it onto the big screen, and he pitched a Kraven idea. He also highlighted the Clone Saga and a scene on a train roof where Spider-Man meets Spider-Woman.

He named the Spider-Man 2099 suit as another favorite, calling it epic, though he joked he would look ridiculous in it because the character is a huge man mountain. The conversation makes clear how much he wants to draw from comics. It also comes as ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has grossed roughly $2.5 billion worldwide.

Holland has hinted at this before. In July, while promoting ‘Brand New Day,’ he was asked which MCU team-up he wanted most, and he named Quinn. He said their comic book stories are fun and that he thinks the two would get along well.

Quinn has said the same in reverse. He told The Hollywood Reporter at the premiere of ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ that he was “up for it.” He has also called Holland the best Spider-Man ever and noted that he once auditioned for the role himself.

The idea has support from the top. Kevin Feige has said Marvel casts with a blue-sky dream in mind of one day being able to do the pairing. He described Johnny Storm and Peter Parker as one of the key relationships in Marvel comics, and said it is now in the realm of possibility.

That is a big shift. Marvel Studios gained access to the Fantastic Four in 2019 after acquiring 20th Century Fox, while Sony still owns the rights to Spider-Man’s live-action films. The ongoing collaboration between the two studios is what has made these conversations realistic.

The obvious venue is an Avengers film. Quinn returns as the Human Torch in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ which opens December 18. At the time of earlier comments, Holland had not been confirmed for the lineup, and Marvel has not announced anything since.

That leaves the door open for other paths, including a future Spider-Man movie. Holland’s suggestion that he would like to explore the relationship suggests there is at least interest from the star. Whether the studios can align schedules is another question.

The comics have paired the two for decades, with Johnny often acting as a jokey best friend to Peter. Their banter is one of the most quotable parts of the Marvel universe. Bringing that to the screen would offer a fun contrast to the more serious tone of the Multiverse Saga.

It would also give both actors a chance to show more range. Quinn has said he wants to tell a story with Holland, and Holland has said the same. With both sides eager, it is only a matter of time before Marvel takes notice.
