‘Toy Story 5’ First Reactions Are In — Everyone Agrees It’s a Powerful Sequel
Pixar appears to have another big hit on its hands. The first press screenings for Toy Story 5 have taken place, and early reactions have been overwhelmingly positive. Critics who attended the screenings are praising the film for its emotional story, strong characters, and classic Pixar charm.
According to reactions shared on X, many critics believe Toy Story 5 stands alongside the best films in the franchise. Several reviewers even compared it to the original trilogy, which is widely considered one of the greatest animated series ever made.
Film critic Scott Menzel was among the first to share his thoughts. He described the movie as a return to everything fans love about Toy Story.
“Toy Story 5 ranks right alongside the first three films, delivering a perfect blend of humor, heart, and that signature Pixar magic.”
Menzel also praised the film’s emotional impact and called it one of Pixar’s strongest recent efforts.
“‘Toy Story 5’ is a wonderfully heartfelt return to form for Pixar Animation Studios and a reminder of why the ‘Toy Story’ franchise remains one of the greatest film series ever made. Emotional, hilarious, and genuinely moving, ‘Toy Story 5’ may very well end up being one of the best films of 2026.”
The positive reactions did not stop there. Daniel Baptista, host of The Movie Podcast, said the film left a major impression on him. He described watching the movie as a memorable experience and praised the story for connecting with today’s audience.
“Pixar once again delivers a meaningful, moving, and masterful must-see movie.”
He also highlighted Conan O’Brien’s new character, Smarty Pants, while noting that Jessie takes center stage in this chapter of the story.
Variety senior artisans editor Jazz Tangcay also shared strong praise after seeing the film. She said the sequel gives Jessie the spotlight she has deserved for years.
“‘Toy Story 5’ is a magical and pure perfection. It is a fantastic entry into the franchise. Jessie finally gets the story she deserves! It’s emotional, funny, genuinely warm, and perfect in every way.”
Collider editor Meredith Loftus had a similar reaction. She said the movie surprised her emotionally and tackled modern themes in a meaningful way.
“‘Toy Story 5’ hit me in places I was unprepared for! Exploring the divide between technology and toys through Jessie results in a deeply profound, moving story that had me in a puddle of tears. I put it up there with ‘Toy Story’ 2 & 3. It’s that excellent!”
The new movie reunites Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie and the rest of the beloved toy gang. After the events of Toy Story 4, Woody returns to join his old friends for another adventure. This time, the toys face a new challenge in the form of Lilypad, a tablet-like device that becomes part of Bonnie’s life.
Director Andrew Stanton explained that Lilypad is not a traditional villain but represents changing times.
“Lilypad is built like a toy in the sense that she wants to help the kid go forward, but she’s got very different skills and zero experience, whereas Jessie has nothing but experience and is probably unprepared for what to do.”
With glowing early reactions and strong praise from critics, Toy Story 5 is already shaping up to be one of Pixar’s biggest releases in years. Fans will find out for themselves when the film arrives in theaters on June 19.
