‘Tracker’ Season 4 Episode 2 Recap & Ending Explained: Russell’s Strange Text and a Possible Love Interest
Colter Shaw’s cases usually end with a rescue and a reward, but the ‘Tracker’ ending this week leaves a different kind of question hanging over the hour. The missing-persons mystery gets solved, yet the last few minutes quietly point at trouble that has nothing to do with the trail. It’s a reminder that this show has been playing a longer game all along.
The CBS drama returned after being renewed for a fourth season in January 2026, kicking off with the port rescue in “Safe Harbor.” The series has also changed scenery, with production relocating from Vancouver to Los Angeles. Some fans complained that the premiere barely touched the lingering storylines from the previous season.
This week’s installment, “Switchback,” aired on CBS on October 11 and went a different way. Colter searches for a mother and daughter who vanish while hiking the Pacific Divide Trail after he discovers they were being stalked. The case wraps up inside the hour, but the closing beat with Russell is the part that will have fans talking.
The episode opens with Leanne and Kayla hiking in the Sierra, and Kayla is convinced someone is following them. Her mother brushes it off. When the pair miss a supply stop, Kayla’s sister Anya reports them missing, and Colter takes the job.
On the trail he teams up with Becca, a “trail angel” who was already looking for the hikers. She leads him to a dangerous secluded stretch called the “Thin Area,” where he finds a makeshift camp with Leanne’s bloody backpack. A bloodied Leanne then staggers out of the woods and mistakes Colter for her daughter’s kidnapper.
Leanne explains that she was knocked unconscious after leaving Kayla to find help for her twisted ankle. A drifter named Jonah finally tells Colter he saw a big man in a baseball cap put Kayla into an old brown truck tied to Sierra Junction. With Randy’s help, Colter narrows the search to a coffee shop called Rise & Grind, where a worker named Diana says she doesn’t remember the women.
Things turn dangerous when Becca is hit by the brown truck and rushed to the hospital. Colter’s pursuit leads him to a man named Jack, who dies before he can answer any questions. Randy then finds Jack’s home and learns that Diana is his mother, a woman who had been in a psych ward 30 years earlier.

Diana, it turns out, had been protecting her son all along. Colter finds her holding Kayla at the property, and the standoff nearly turns deadly. Before either side can fire, Kayla sneaks up and knocks Diana unconscious, which ends the ordeal.
Kayla is reunited with her mother and sister, and the family continues on its journey to spread their father’s ashes. It’s a neat, satisfying finish for a hiking thriller. One critic noted that it’s the second case in a row that ends on a win, and hopes later cases will leave more of a mark on Colter.
The real ending belongs to Russell. Colter has been trying to reach his brother and finally gets a text back in which Russell apologizes for going quiet, says he’s been busy and promises they’ll talk soon. But the message doesn’t sound like Russell, and when Colter asks whether he’s okay, there’s no reply.
That silence matters because of how the previous season ended. Russell took a secretive job from the man behind a covert government operation to keep Colter from learning a disturbing secret about their father, Ashton. He even told Reenie not to let Colter track him down, so the red flags are stacking up.
Elsewhere, Mel asks Reenie to look into her mother’s murder case. A military officer who worked with her mother, Eric Jeffries, retired early shortly before the murder, and his records are blocked. Reenie ends the day visibly concerned, which suggests this thread is heading toward Colter’s desk.
Becca, meanwhile, has fans wondering whether Colter has a new love interest. The two clicked right away, and she earned respect by encouraging him to chase the suspect even after she was hit by a truck. Executive producer Elwood Reid told Us Weekly that this season would show “the buds of a relationship forming” for Colter, though nothing confirms Becca is that person.
Whether Becca returns or not, the hour makes clear that the show is setting up its season-long threads quietly while keeping its case-of-the-week formula intact. One outlet has also noted that ‘Marshals’ has since overtaken ‘Tracker’ in the ratings, so the pressure to deliver is real.
