A 12-year-old boy from West Yorkshire has died after trying to copy a scene from the Netflix series Squid Game as a prank.

Sebastian Cizman, from Glasshoughton, was found by his cousin at home in June, lying on the stairs with a sheet around his neck. Paramedics arrived quickly but could not save him. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital, an inquest revealed this week.

Sebastian was a fan of Squid Game, a South Korean series where players compete in deadly versions of children’s games to win money. Police said they found an image on his phone of a character who had died in the show in a similar way. He had also shared the same image in a WhatsApp group chat on the day he died.

The inquest described Sebastian as a prankster who often pretended to be unconscious while joking with friends. His family told investigators they had warned him about dangerous online challenges, which have tragically claimed the lives of children around the world. Sebastian had told them he would never take part.

Police said they did not find any evidence that Sebastian had been searching for dangerous challenges on TikTok. However, they did discover that he had watched a YouTube video about “surviving choking alone.”

His parents described him as a happy and popular child with no mental health issues. In a statement, they said they believe his death was a tragic accident.

“He was a happy child who loved to joke and play,” they said. “We are devastated by what happened and hope this tragedy can raise awareness of how dangerous some things can be for children.”
