Jennifer Lopez is back on the big screen with a brand-new role that is already getting a lot of attention. She will star in Kiss of the Spider Woman, a new film written and directed by Bill Condon, who is best known for Dreamgirls and Chicago.

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are also on board as executive producers. Netflix has released both the trailer and the first poster, giving fans a first look at Lopez as the glamorous but haunting Spider Woman.

This is not the first time the story has been adapted. The original 1985 version of Kiss of the Spider Woman, based on the 1976 novel by Manuel Puig, earned William Hurt an Academy Award and also featured Sonia Braga and Raúl Juliá. The new version also takes inspiration from the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, written by Terrence McNally with music by John Kander and Fred Ebb.

The film follows the lives of two men who meet inside a prison cell. Valentín, a political prisoner, is forced to share space with Molina, a window dresser locked up for public indecency. Their tense situation slowly changes as Molina tells Valentín the story of his favorite movie diva, Ingrid Luna, played by Jennifer Lopez. Through these stories, the two prisoners form a complicated and unexpected bond.

The cast features Lopez as Ingrid Luna, Diego Luna as Valentín, and Tonatiuh as Molina. Both Lopez and Luna are also serving as executive producers on the film.

In an interview with Variety in January 2025, Lopez explained how much this role meant to her. “I was waiting my whole life to be able to do a real big MGM Hollywood musical, and I finally got to do it,” she said. She added, “I got into movies because of West Side Story. I thought I was going to do Broadway. I wanted to do musicals. I love musicals. My kids love musicals. My mother did. It was a dream fulfilled in having done the movie.”

Kiss of the Spider Woman will be released in theaters on October 10, 2025. With a poster and trailer already out, fans now have their first taste of the film’s dramatic style and Jennifer Lopez’s big musical comeback.
