[Trailer] Noomi Rapace Becomes Mother Teresa in First Look at ‘Mother’
The first trailer has arrived for Mother, a new drama starring Noomi Rapace as Mother Teresa. The film is directed by Teona Strugar Mitevska, who is stepping into English-language filmmaking for the first time.
The story is not a direct retelling of Mother Teresa’s life but instead imagines a week that changed her path forever. It follows her decision to leave her convent in Kolkata and begin her own order, which later became the Missionaries of Charity.
Rapace plays Anjezë Bojaxhiu, who would become known to the world as Mother Teresa. Sylvia Hoeks joins her as Sister Agnieszka, while Nikola Ristanovski plays Father Friedrich, a trusted priest.
The movie is based on Mitevska’s earlier miniseries Teresa and I from 2015. According to reports from the Berlinale Co-Production Market, where the project was first presented in 2022, the director wanted to expand on that work and approach Teresa’s story from a new angle.
Production took place in Belgium and India, wrapping in late 2024. Rapace has said she was drawn to the role because of how different this version of the story feels. She called the film “punk rock”, suggesting it will surprise people expecting a traditional biopic.
Mother had its world premiere on August 27, 2025, in the Orizzonti section of the Venice International Film Festival.
With the first trailer now out, the film is already drawing attention for its bold take on one of the most well-known figures of the 20th century.
Casting Noomi Rapace as Mother Teresa is a bold move, and it looks like this film is trying to break away from safe storytelling to give audiences something new. Calling it “punk rock” sets up a lot of curiosity. But whether people will welcome this fresh angle or feel it goes too far remains to be seen.
