The movie is directed by Joachim Rønning and written by Jesse Wigutow, based on a story co-created with David Digilio. Tron: Ares is the third installment in the series and serves as a follow-up to Tron: Legacy from 2010.
The story follows Ares, a highly advanced program sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with artificial intelligence, according to Walt Disney Pictures.
Jared Leto stars as Ares, the super-intelligent program. The film also features Greta Lee as Eve Kim, Evan Peters as Julian Dillinger, Hasan Minhaj as Ajay Singh, Jodie Turner-Smith as Athena, Arturo Castro as Seth Flores, Cameron Monaghan as Caius, Gillian Anderson as Elisabeth Dillinger, and Jeff Bridges returning as Kevin Flynn. Sarah Desjardins is also part of the cast.
The project has a long history. A Tron sequel was first discussed in 2010 by creator Steven Lisberger, with plans to continue the story from Tron: Legacy. Over the years, multiple directors and writers were attached.
Garth Davis was set to direct in 2020, but stepped down in January 2023. Rønning took over the following month. Production was initially delayed by the 2023 Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes but finally began in January 2024 in Vancouver, wrapping in May. Industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails is composing the score.
Tron: Ares went through several changes over the years. Earlier sequels considered following Sam Flynn and Quorra in the real world, but those plans were canceled after the box office failure of Tomorrowland.
The franchise then remained on hold for several years until Disney decided to reboot it with Leto in a new role.
With the new trailer now available, fans can see the visual style and high-tech action that Tron: Ares promises to deliver. The film aims to bring a fresh story while continuing the legacy of the Tron universe.
