President Donald Trump is facing strong criticism after responding harshly to reports about the deaths of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner.

According to reports, police launched a homicide investigation and took the Reiners’ adult son into custody in connection with the case. Authorities have not released full details, and the investigation is still ongoing.

As the news spread, attention quickly shifted to Trump’s response. Instead of offering sympathy, the president posted a message on Truth Social that focused on his past political feud with Reiner. The post drew immediate backlash from many who said it was inappropriate given the circumstances.

In the post, Trump suggested that Reiner was responsible for his own death, writing that he suffered from what he called “a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.”

Trump was later asked about the reaction while speaking to reporters at the White House. He made it clear he was not backing down.

“Well I wasn’t a fan of his at all,” Trump said. “He was a deranged person, as far as Trump is concerned.” He went on to accuse Reiner of spreading claims during the Russia investigation and said the filmmaker damaged his own career.

Trump ended the exchange by saying, “So I was not a fan of Rob Reiner at all, in any way, shape or form. I thought he was very bad for our country,” before moving on to another question.

Rob Reiner had been one of Trump’s most vocal critics for years. He frequently spoke out against Trump’s leadership and warned about threats to democracy. In a recent interview with MSNBC host Ali Velshi, Reiner said the country was heading toward authoritarian rule under Trump’s second term.

“Make no mistake: We have a year before this country becomes a full-on autocracy,” Reiner said during that interview, according to MSNBC.

Trump’s comments after the reported deaths sparked outrage from public figures. Maria Shriver, a close friend of the Reiner family, responded with a series of posts on X that were widely shared by news outlets.

She wrote that Trump’s words showed “no human decency” and called the remarks “absolutely disgusting.” Shriver said the family was in deep pain and deserved compassion, not political attacks.

“What kind of human being would share a statement like this, much less a president?” she wrote, according to screenshots cited by PEOPLE.

The situation has left many people disturbed, not only by the reported crime itself but also by the way it was publicly discussed by a sitting president.
