UK Cinemas Add More Early ‘Dune: Part Three’ IMAX Screenings as Demand Explodes

Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune‘ saga has spent the better part of five years building toward this moment. What started as a gamble on adapting one of science fiction’s most notoriously “unfilmable” novels has become one of the defining blockbuster franchises of the decade, and its conclusion is now just months away.

With the trilogy’s final chapter set to hit theaters this December, anticipation has been building steadily on both sides of the Atlantic. Ticket drops for premium formats have already turned into recurring internet events, with fans refreshing booking pages the moment new showtimes appear.

That frenzy has now spilled over into the UK, where major cinema chains have had to scramble to keep up. Cineworld and Odeon both opened additional early IMAX and PLF screenings of ‘Dune: Part Three’ today, adding extra capacity for December 15 showings after existing early tickets proved far more popular than expected.

Odeon reportedly went a step further, opening a brand new session at one of its West End Dolby locations to absorb some of that overflow. The early screenings arrive three days ahead of the film’s wider UK theatrical release, giving eager fans a chance to see the trilogy’s ending before its official December 18 opening.

London’s BFI IMAX is also part of the preview rollout, with a December 15 screening presented in IMAX 70mm on what the venue describes as the biggest screen in the country. Tickets for that particular showing went on sale at 9 a.m. on September 9, and demand for the format has been intense enough that additional capacity has become something of a recurring theme throughout the film’s marketing rollout.

Villeneuve has been vocal about wanting audiences to experience ‘Dune: Part Three’ on as large a canvas as possible. Speaking at an exclusive trailer event in Los Angeles alongside stars including Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, and Javier Bardem, the director explained that he wants the film to be seen on the biggest screen possible, a sentiment he shared in comments reported by Sharp Magazine.

That philosophy lines up with how the film was actually shot. Much of ‘Dune: Part Three’ was captured using a combination of IMAX-certified digital cameras and IMAX film cameras, marking Villeneuve’s first time using the format across an entire production rather than select sequences.

‘Dune: Part Three’ picks up nearly two decades after the events of ‘Dune: Part Two,’ with Paul Atreides, played by Timothée Chalamet, now ruling as Emperor and facing the consequences of the power he seized. The film adapts Frank Herbert’s novel ‘Dune Messiah’ and brings back Zendaya as Chani, alongside Jason Momoa, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Isaach De Bankolé, Charlotte Rampling, and Javier Bardem. Pattinson joins the cast as a new villain named Scytale.

This isn’t the first time ‘Dune: Part Three’ ticketing has caused chaos. Earlier waves of IMAX 70mm sales in the United States reportedly sold out within hours, with resale prices on secondary markets climbing well past face value and some listings reportedly approaching $1,000 for a single seat.

American moviegoers have also run into technical headaches trying to secure early access, with booking apps crashing under traffic during previous on-sale windows. It’s a pattern that seems to be repeating itself now across the UK market as well, as chains work to accommodate fans who missed out on earlier allocations.

Part of the urgency likely comes from timing. ‘Dune: Part Three’ is set to open the same December weekend as ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ setting up one of the more closely watched box office showdowns of the year and giving Warner Bros. extra incentive to build word of mouth through early screenings before the wide release.

Whether these newly added UK screenings will be enough to satisfy demand remains to be seen, but for now, fans hoping to catch ‘Dune: Part Three’ early have a few more chances than they did yesterday. Given how quickly previous ticket waves have vanished, anyone still hoping to grab a seat probably shouldn’t wait too long to try.
