Vanessa Kirby Hints at Sue Storm’s Dramatic Journey in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Vanessa Kirby is opening up about what’s next for her character, Sue Storm, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Kirby plays Sue Storm in the 2025 film The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the second reboot of the classic superhero team.
The film was directed by Matt Shakman and written by Josh Friedman, Eric Pearson, Jeff Kaplan, and Ian Springer. It stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn, with a supporting cast including Julia Garner, Mark Gatiss, Natasha Lyonne, Paul Walter Hauser, and Ralph Ineson.
The story is set in the 1960s, in a retro-futuristic world where the Fantastic Four must stop the planet-eating villain Galactus, played by Ineson.
Sue Storm plays a crucial role in First Steps. She is not only the one who stops Galactus but also the first person to encounter her young son Franklin’s powers. During her fight with Galactus, Sue gives everything she has to push him toward a bridge and teleport him away.
In the process, she overexerts herself and dies. Witnessing this, Franklin somehow uses his powers to bring her back to life. It’s a dramatic moment that has big consequences for the character moving forward in the MCU.
In an interview with MovieWeb’s George Edelman to promote her new Netflix movie Night Always Comes, Kirby talked about Sue Storm’s journey in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. “I love that I get to continue with Sue because it’s so interesting,” Kirby said. She explained that the events of First Steps, especially Sue giving her life and being resurrected, will shape the character in Avengers: Doomsday. “I’ve been thinking a lot doing Avengers and stuff about how someone that’s been through, in the space of basically a week, someone who has given birth and has died and come back to life… how a death experience like that would change you.”
Kirby also shared how she is preparing for the role. She’s been studying real-life near-death experiences to understand how people change after such events. “I’ve been listening to a lot of people that have had those kind of experiences and what they learn, and therefore how different they are after they come back from that,” she said. This research is helping her bring depth and authenticity to Sue Storm as she moves into Phase Six of the MCU.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters in the United States on December 18, 2026. The story takes place fourteen months after the events of Thunderbolts (2025) and brings together the Avengers, Wakandans, Fantastic Four, New Avengers, and the original X-Men to face Doctor Doom.
The movie will feature the entire main cast of First Steps. Its sequel, Secret Wars, is scheduled for December 17, 2027, promising even bigger team-ups and epic battles for the MCU.
