Marvel closed out ‘The Fantastic Four First Steps’ with one of the most emotionally charged twists the studio has delivered in years, and fans have been waiting ever since to see how that fallout carries into the franchise’s next chapter. Few characters heading into ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ carry more unresolved weight than Sue Storm.

That weight comes directly from where her story left off. Vanessa Kirby’s Invisible Woman sacrificed her life defending Earth from Galactus at the end of ‘First Steps,’ only to be brought back moments later through her son Franklin’s extraordinary abilities. Watching her step into a brand new Marvel crossover after an experience like that changes the entire context of her return.

That return is now visible in the new trailer, showing Kirby’s Sue Storm standing on a windswept beach in her full Fantastic Four uniform, hair blowing in the wind as waves crash behind her. It is a quieter image compared to some of the trailer’s bigger action beats, but it carries real emotional resonance given everything her character has just survived.

Kirby has been open about how seriously she is treating this arc, describing her preparation for the role as something far more grounded than a typical superhero comeback. Speaking with MovieWeb, Kirby explained that she has been listening to accounts from people who have gone through similarly profound experiences, studying what they learn afterward and how fundamentally different they become once they return from something like that.

That approach reflects just how much Marvel appears willing to lean into the psychological aftermath of Sue’s death rather than simply moving past it. In a separate conversation, Kirby noted that Sue’s comic history includes an incredibly dark and complicated period as the character Malice, suggesting there is a great deal of unexplored psychological territory left to draw from as her story continues.

The timeline itself only deepens the weight of that experience. Sue’s death and resurrection both occurred within the span of roughly a week, according to the story established in First Steps, compressing an enormous emotional journey into an incredibly short window before she is thrust into an even bigger conflict alongside the Avengers.

Kirby has also spoken about what made stepping into this massive ensemble feel less daunting, crediting the bond she built with her fellow Fantastic Four cast members. She told Deadline that she knew she would not be facing this new chapter alone, explaining that her castmates have genuinely become family and that keeping the core four together made the transition into a project this large feel far less intimidating.

That sense of unity matters heading into a film where the Fantastic Four are merging with multiple other hero teams for the first time. Having Sue Storm anchored by that support system gives her arc a stability that contrasts sharply with the trauma her character is quietly still processing.

What are you most interested to see from Sue Storm in Avengers: Doomsday?

Seeing Sue Storm framed alone on that beach, rather than surrounded by chaos or combat, suggests Marvel understands the emotional stakes tied to her character are just as important as the larger multiversal threat she is about to face. It is a rare moment of stillness in a trailer otherwise packed with confrontation.

Given everything Sue Storm has already endured before this story even begins, her presence in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ feels less like a simple team-up cameo and more like the continuation of one of Phase Six’s most emotionally loaded arcs. With the film set to arrive in theaters on December 18, fans are eager to see exactly how that journey continues.
