Dakota Johnson has a long history with ‘Saturday Night Live,‘ and her latest turn as host added another chapter to it. She first hosted in 2015 and returned in January 2024, and she also made a cameo in Season 51 as “Madeline” during Lily Allen’s performance.

This weekend marked her third time hosting, with Turnstile making their musical guest debut. The timing was special, since her birthday is Oct. 4 and she became just the sixth host in the show’s history to appear on the show on her birthday. She even told Vogue that her birthday would roll over in the middle of the broadcast.

Fans now have a look at what the buildup was like. SNL shared on Instagram photo of Johnson getting ready in a red dress, photographed from behind in front of a lit vanity mirror. A handwritten sign taped to the mirror reads “Happy Birthday Dakota” and notes the date, and a “Happy Birthday” message from a fan account appears over the image.

The glossy red dress was a standout on stage as well. Johnson wore a red latex dress during her opening monologue, and she joked that she would celebrate her birthday at midnight by standing in the middle of midtown in a latex dress looking for attention. It was a self-aware line that matched the show’s tone.

The monologue also took aim at the career highs and lows of her recent years. Johnson joked she was still promoting ‘Madame Web,’ her last project when she hosted, because the movie hasn’t made any money yet. She then moved on to her dating history with musicians, which set up the biggest surprise of the night.

Taylor Swift walked out to join Johnson during the monologue, and the pair traded jokes about their friendship. Swift squealed that it was Johnson’s birthday, slightly prematurely, since midnight hadn’t arrived yet. At the end of the episode, during the goodnights, she brought out a birthday cake for Johnson.

The cameo follows weeks of close moments between the two. Johnson co-stars in Swift’s ‘Patient Zero’ music video, and she presented Swift with an award at the VMAs days before the show. For fans following the friendship, the backstage sign feels like part of a larger celebration.

Johnson was on the show to promote ‘Verity,’ the thriller co-starring Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett. It opened in theaters the day before, and the film is projected to earn $33.6 million over its opening weekend, which would give it the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office. That would be the best domestic debut in eight years for a movie starring Johnson, since ‘Fifty Shades Freed’ in 2018.

The movie did face mixed reviews, sitting at 45% on Rotten Tomatoes ahead of release. It was produced for $40 million, so a strong opening gave Amazon MGM Studios some good news. Johnson even joked about the film in her monologue, mentioning her make-out scene with a newly pregnant Hathaway.

The backstage moment has a family angle as well. In her first monologue in 2015, Johnson explained that her mother, Melanie Griffith, hosted ‘SNL’ in December 1988, and that her father, Don Johnson, proposed to her again backstage after the show. Johnson added that she was born nine months later and joked that she was likely conceived that night.

That backstory makes a backstage photo on her birthday feel a bit more meaningful. The show has been woven into her family story for decades, and now it has been part of her birthday too.

Johnson is now over halfway to the show’s Five-Timers Club, which gives fans something else to look forward to. In the meantime, her night in Studio 8H gave audiences a monologue, a Swift cameo and a birthday cake.
