‘Verity’ Trailer Turns Colleen Hoover’s Twisted Bestseller Into a Full-Blown Psychological Thriller

Colleen Hoover has built one of the most devoted fanbases in modern publishing, and Hollywood has taken notice. Following the massive success of ‘It Ends with Us,’ studios have been eager to bring more of her novels to the screen, and one of her darkest, most divisive books is finally getting its cinematic moment.

‘Verity‘ has been in development for months, quietly building anticipation with a teaser back in April that hinted at the story’s unsettling premise. That early glimpse showed Dakota Johnson’s character stepping into a shadowy mansion, with barely any dialogue revealing what she was walking into.

Now Amazon MGM Studios has released the full trailer for ‘Verity,’ giving fans their clearest look yet at the psychological thriller ahead of its October 2 theatrical release. The film adapts Hoover’s best-selling novel of the same name and stars Anne Hathaway as the mysterious title character, Verity Crawford, alongside Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett.

The story follows Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer played by Johnson, who is hired to finish the final novel in a wildly successful book series after its author, Verity Crawford, is left unable to walk or speak following a devastating accident. Jeremy Crawford, played by Hartnett, brings Lowen into the family home to complete his wife’s unfinished work, but nothing about the arrangement turns out to be as simple as it sounds.

Once inside the Crawford estate, Lowen discovers what appears to be Verity’s own private manuscript, filled with disturbing, autobiographical confessions that call into question everything she thought she knew about the family she’s living with. The trailer leans hard into that unease, with the whir of Verity’s wheelchair becoming an unsettling motif throughout.

Jeremy tells Lowen that doctors don’t believe his wife will ever walk or talk again, a detail the trailer makes clear will carry more weight than it initially seems. He also relays that Verity herself called Lowen a “brilliant, undiscovered voice” and the only writer capable of finishing the series, setting up a dynamic where Lowen becomes increasingly entangled with both Verity’s unfinished work and Jeremy himself.

That blurring of fiction and reality has always been central to what makes Hoover’s novel so unsettling, and the trailer suggests director Michael Showalter is leaning fully into that tension rather than softening it for a wider audience. Manipulation, obsession, and attraction all appear woven into Lowen’s growing entanglement with the Crawford family, mirroring the psychological unraveling that made the book a favorite among thriller readers.

‘Verity’ arrives at a moment when Hoover adaptations are becoming a genuine box office category of their own, following the cultural conversation sparked by ‘It Ends with Us’ last year. With Hathaway, Johnson, and Hartnett all bringing significant star power, expectations for this adaptation are considerably higher than a typical book-to-film thriller.

The trailer also marks a notably busy stretch for Hathaway, who has appeared in multiple major releases this year, adding another high-profile role to an already packed 2026. Whether ‘Verity’ can capture the same fervor that made Hoover’s novel a viral sensation remains to be seen, but the trailer suggests the film isn’t holding back on the story’s darker, more twisted elements.
