Vince Gilligan, the creator of Breaking Bad, knows his show better than anyone. Over its five seasons, the series gave fans countless unforgettable moments.

From tense standoffs to shocking twists, some scenes have stayed with viewers long after the credits rolled. Gilligan recently shared which five scenes he thinks are the greatest, giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at what made Breaking Bad so special.

In season two, episode seven, a cartel member named Tortuga, who works with the DEA, is killed by his own gang.

They put his head on a tortoise and leave it in the desert where a DEA raid is planned. When an agent lifts the head, a hidden bomb goes off, killing one agent and hurting three others. The scene is shocking, full of meaning, and one of the most memorable moments on the show.

4. The literal face-off

In season four, episode 13, Gus Fring, a powerful meth kingpin, meets a shocking death. Walter tricks Gus into visiting Hector Salamanca in the hospital, where a bomb is hidden on Hector’s wheelchair.

The explosion kills both Hector and Gus. After the blast, Gus walks out with half of his face blown off before collapsing dead. The scene was carefully directed and became one of the most memorable moments in the series.

3. The real Walter

In season one, episode five, we see a key moment in Walter White’s story. Walter, a school teacher, is offered help by an old friend, Elliott Schwartz, who is now rich and runs a science company. Elliott offers to pay for Walter’s medical treatment and even give him a job to support his family.

Walter refuses the offer. His pride is too strong, and he wants to do things his own way. Vince Gilligan said this moment shows the real Walter: a man driven by ego and pride, willing to take risks instead of accepting help. This is when Walter truly “breaks bad” and the show shifts into a darker, more intense story.

2. ‘Better Call Saul’

A top Breaking Bad episode list wouldn’t be complete without Saul Goodman, one of Vince Gilligan’s favorite characters. Saul was so popular that he got his own spin-off show. In season two, episode eight, we see the first meeting between Saul and Walter and Jesse, which sets the stage for his role in their drug business.

When one of their street dealers is arrested by the DEA, Walter and Jesse send him to Saul. In his office, Saul spends several minutes talking about how they will handle payments, cash, money orders, but definitely not American Express.

The scene is funny and shows Saul’s cheeky, over-the-top personality. It also marks the start of one of the show’s best character arcs.

1. Mike down

Another fan-favorite character is Mike, who works for Gus Fring as a private investigator, security head, fixer, and sometimes hitman. Fans only meet him at his death in season five, episode seven.

Mike and Walter have worked together before, but their relationship falls apart after Gus dies. Walter catches Mike trying to leave town, and in a tense moment, Walter demands Mike give him the names of his imprisoned associates. Mike refuses, and in a sudden fit of anger, Walter shoots him. Even Walter didn’t expect to do it, says Gilligan.

This moment shows Walter fully turning to the dark side and has a big effect on Jesse. The scene was written and directed by Thomas Schnauz, a close friend of Gilligan, and it was Schnauz’s first time directing professionally. “There wasn’t a dry eye in the house that day,” he said.
