Vince Gilligan’s New Show Breaks Records, Hits 99% on Rotten Tomatoes
Vince Gilligan, the creator behind the hit series Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, is back with a new show called Pluribus, which has already made a huge impact on Apple TV.
The sci-fi series stars Rhea Seehorn, who previously worked with Gilligan on Better Call Saul. She plays Carol Sturka, an author who is one of the few people immune to a sudden hive mind that sweeps over humanity, trying to integrate everyone into itself. The show’s title, Pluribus, is a nod to the Latin phrase e pluribus unum, meaning “out of many, one.”
Apple TV has already ordered two seasons of the series, and the first season premiered with two episodes on November 7. The nine-episode season has drawn significant praise from critics, particularly for Gilligan’s writing and direction, Seehorn’s performance, and the show’s unique tone and style.
On Rotten Tomatoes, Pluribus currently holds an impressive 99% approval rating based on 108 critic reviews. The site’s consensus reads, “Genuinely original science-fiction fare from television veteran Vince Gilligan, Pluribus leads Rhea Seehorn through a brave new world with plentiful returns.” Metacritic also gave the series high marks, scoring it 86 out of 100 and labeling it “universal acclaim.”
Critics have highlighted both the series’ visual style and its deliberate pacing. Nicholas Quah of Vulture called it “an entrancing piece of television” and praised Seehorn’s performance as “remarkable”, noting that she brings viewers fully into the story. Quah added that the show’s pacing, “deliberate and meandering, both thrilling and confounding in its refusal to yield payoff, immediate or otherwise,” makes it stand out. He also complimented the series’ cinematography and production design as “gorgeous.”
Kaiya Shunyata from RogerEbert.com described Pluribus as “one of this year’s most complicated and thrilling television series” and a “bewildering mix of science fiction and noir.” She praised the dynamic between Seehorn and co-star Wydra as “fascinating to watch” and noted how commanding Seehorn is on screen.
