‘VisionQuest’ First Reactions Hail It as a Worthy Heir to ‘WandaVision’ After Surprise NYCC Screening
Marvel’s small-screen corner has had a bumpy stretch lately, with fewer shows on the calendar and a few flagship series winding down. That makes the arrival of ‘VisionQuest’ feel like a bigger moment than a typical streaming premiere. It is the show many fans have been waiting on, and the early word is finally in.
The series is the closing chapter of a loosely connected trilogy that began with ‘WandaVision’ and continued with ‘Agatha All Along’. Paul Bettany returns as Vision, while James Spader steps back into the role of Ultron. Terry Matalas, best known for his work on ‘Star Trek: Picard’, leads the show as showrunner.
On Oct. 8, Marvel pulled a surprise at New York Comic Con by screening the first episode of ‘VisionQuest‘ during its Marvel Television and Animation panel. Once the embargo lifted at 5:45 p.m. ET, the ‘VisionQuest’ first reactions started rolling in, and they were overwhelmingly glowing. Press and fan-community voices called it a fitting heir to ‘WandaVision’, a mystery packed with Easter eggs that opens and closes strongly, and a deeply satisfying watch.
The strongest thread running through the response is how emotional the show is. Reactions point to themes of love, grief, generational trauma and identity, along with the Maximoff family legacy. Several viewers said it feels like a love letter to Wanda Maximoff at times.
The father-son relationship between Vision and Tommy also drew plenty of attention. One reaction called the show a sincere, clever and ambitious sequel with a warm center, while another said it embraces its place in the Marvel universe in a way that rewards longtime fans. For a series that deals with a machine searching for humanity, that human core seems to be landing.
The cast earned heavy praise too. Spader’s return as Ultron was the most frequently singled out performance, and the chemistry between Bettany and Spader came up again and again. Emily Hampshire, described as a surprisingly entertaining addition, was repeatedly named as a standout.
Not every reaction was pure celebration. One early viewer said the middle stretch of the episode drags a little, even while calling the overall package a fitting end to the trilogy. Others leaned into the Easter eggs, which suggests longtime fans will have plenty to dig through.
It is also worth remembering that these early takes come from a single surprise screening, and most of the chatter focuses on tone and themes rather than concrete plot details. Marvel has kept the story under wraps, which is part of why the first reactions have generated so much interest.

According to TV Insider, the series picks up after the ‘WandaVision’ finale, when White Vision received the memories of the original Vision and left for an unknown destination. The show follows him as he searches for a new purpose. At the New York Comic Con panel where the show was first announced, as Marvel.com reported, Bettany explained that White Vision holds Red Vision’s memories but struggles to feel them, setting up a central question about identity.
Sneak-peek footage at that panel confirmed a deep bench of familiar voices and faces. Henry Lewis plays D.U.M.-E, Jonathan Sayer plays U, James D’Arcy plays J.A.R.V.I.S., Orla Brady plays F.R.I.D.A.Y. and Hampshire plays E.D.I.T.H. The footage also closed with Ruaridh Mollica appearing as Thomas Shepherd, the character known as Speed.
The wider cast includes Faran Tahir as Raza, along with Todd Stashwick and T’Nia Miller. Marvel’s own panel presentation stressed that Matalas knows the MCU’s lore well, which should reward fans who have followed the franchise closely.
The timing could hardly be better for a studio looking to reassure its audience. ‘VisionQuest’ is set to premiere on Disney+ on Oct. 14, and ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ is set to follow it in 2027 for its final season. A strong reception here would give Marvel Television a much-needed win as it reshapes its live-action slate.
It also shows the value of trusting a creative team that understands the material. If the first reactions hold up once the whole season arrives, ‘VisionQuest’ could end the trilogy on exactly the note fans were hoping for.
