‘VisionQuest’ Showrunner Terry Matalas Pitches an ‘Avengers: The Children’s Crusade’ Project for the MCU
Marvel’s streaming trilogy has finally reached its last chapter. ‘VisionQuest‘ premiered on Disney+ today, and its showrunner is already thinking about what comes next for the characters he has been playing with.
The series is the final installment of a trilogy that began with ‘WandaVision’ in 2021 and continued with ‘Agatha All Along’ in 2024. Created and showrun by Terry Matalas, who is known for ‘Star Trek: Picard’, it follows Paul Bettany’s White Vision as he searches for his identity, with James Spader returning as Ultron and Ruaridh Mollica playing an older version of Tommy Maximoff. The 8-episode season streams weekly on Wednesdays.
Now Matalas has said he would jump at the chance to tackle a comic book storyline that fits those characters perfectly. In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, he was asked about a potential ‘Avengers: The Children’s Crusade‘ project, and he said he would love nothing more than to do something like that. He added that it is up to Marvel and that nothing is currently in development.
The comic is a 2010 to 2012 miniseries written by Allan Heinberg and illustrated by Jim Cheung. It follows the Young Avengers Wiccan and Speed, who believe they may be the reborn sons of the Scarlet Witch, as they set out to find their missing mother. The search pulls in the Avengers and the X-Men, with Doctor Doom at the center of the conflict.
The story is also a redemption tale for Wanda Maximoff. It follows the events of ‘Avengers Disassembled’ and ‘House of M’, and it begins with the Scarlet Witch absent from the superhero world.
Matalas made clear what would make a project like that worth doing for him. He said he would want the rest of the family to come along, and that could include Ultron. He also said that Vision, Ultron and the Maximoff family have become part of his DNA, and that he would love to keep working with Marvel.
That fits the story ‘VisionQuest’ has been telling. The series is built around Vision’s relationship with Ultron, which Matalas has described as a father and son dynamic, and it introduces an older Tommy Maximoff. It also takes place largely inside a Mindspace within Vision’s own mind, where Ultron has been living after Vision backed him up rather than destroying him at the end of ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’.

Wanda herself is not part of the series. Elizabeth Olsen has not been announced as part of the cast, and Matalas has indicated that Wanda is absent from the story, which leaves the Scarlet Witch presumed dead. That mirrors the starting point of ‘The Children’s Crusade’ and has fueled fan theories.
One exclusive report has even claimed that ‘VisionQuest’ will serve as the starting point for a storyline inspired by the comic. Marvel has not confirmed any such plan, so it remains speculation. Still, with Doctor Doom set to appear in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, which arrives December 18, the comic’s central villain is already part of the MCU’s immediate future.

For now, Matalas is focused on getting ‘VisionQuest’ in front of audiences, and he has spoken proudly about the collaboration with Bettany and Spader. Marvel has not announced anything beyond the series, but his comments show where his interests lie. If Kevin Feige is looking for a way to continue the Maximoff story, he already has a showrunner who is eager to take it on.
