‘VisionQuest’ Star James Spader Reveals Ultron Has Been Trapped in Vision’s Mind Since ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, and He’s Been Busy

Marvel villains rarely get the luxury of a proper comeback, especially ones whose demise seemed as definitive as Ultron’s did back in 2015. Yet more than a decade after his apparent destruction, one of the MCU’s most quotable antagonists is finally getting a second act nobody saw coming.

James Spader is officially reprising his role as Ultron in Marvel Television’s upcoming series “VisionQuest,” marking his first appearance as the character since “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” The show, which serves as the concluding chapter in the television trilogy that began with “WandaVision” and continued through “Agatha All Along,” finds Paul Bettany’s Vision navigating a fractured mental landscape filled with various AI personalities from his past.

That landscape, it turns out, has secretly housed Ultron this entire time. Spader confirmed the twist directly, revealing that Ultron has effectively been imprisoned inside Vision’s mind ever since their climactic confrontation at the end of “Age of Ultron,” rather than being destroyed outright as most fans assumed.

“He’s had access to the internet, television, history and he’s just been consuming and he’s been painting,” Spader said in an interview with Fandango, describing how Ultron has spent the past decade essentially trapped but far from idle, absorbing information and developing new interests while confined within Vision’s programming.

That reveal directly confirms speculation fans have circulated for years about Ultron’s ambiguous on-screen death. At the end of “Age of Ultron,” Vision confronts the final robotic body containing Ultron’s consciousness, but the actual moment of destruction happens off-screen, cutting away to only a flash of light in the distance. That deliberate ambiguity left the door open for exactly this kind of return.

Rather than being fully erased, it now appears Vision may have absorbed Ultron into his own programming through the Mind Stone, preserving him in a contained, non-threatening state rather than eliminating him entirely. Showrunner Terry Matalas has previously described Ultron’s return as happening in an “amazing, unique way,” appearing in both robotic and human form throughout the series, with the dynamic between Vision and Ultron serving as a core relationship driving the story forward.

Ultron’s resurgence also marks a significant career moment for Spader personally, given how rarely he’s stepped away from his other major television role. This marks his first non-“Blacklist” role in eleven years, and his first non-“Blacklist” television appearance in thirteen years, following the long-running NBC crime drama’s conclusion in 2023.

In “VisionQuest,” Spader takes on the character in a notably different form than his original performance-capture-heavy portrayal, appearing both as the voice behind Ultron’s robotic presence and in a human avatar used to converse directly with Vision within his mind. Marvel unveiled the character’s redesigned human look at D23 on August 15, showing Spader with gray hair, a beard and glasses, a striking departure from the character’s original menacing robotic design.

The series finds Bettany’s Vision attempting to piece together what’s real about his fragmented past, including questions surrounding his estranged relationship with Wanda Maximoff and his possible connection to a now-grown son named Tommy, played by Ruaridh Mollica. Discovering that Ultron has been quietly living, and apparently painting, inside his own mind for over a decade adds an entirely new layer of complexity to that already tangled emotional journey.

With “VisionQuest” premiering October 14 on Disney+ as an eight-episode limited series, fans will finally get to see exactly how Vision reckons with his creator’s unexpected survival, and what Ultron has actually been planning during all that quiet time spent consuming culture and creating art from behind Vision’s mental firewall.
