Warner Bros. Confirms a New ‘Matrix’ Movie Is Officially Coming – Here are the Details

Warner Bros. has spent the past two years quietly working on the next chapter of one of cinema’s most influential sci-fi franchises, and the studio just gave fans confirmation that the project remains very much alive. Buried inside a massive slate reveal covering everything from a live-action ‘Jetsons’ film to a new Batman sequel, the studio reaffirmed that its Matrix revival hasn’t gone anywhere.

The franchise’s last outing, 2021’s ‘The Matrix Resurrections‘, struggled significantly at the box office, pulling in just $160 million against a $190 million budget and leaving many wondering whether the series had reached its natural end. That underwhelming reception didn’t stop Warner Bros. from pursuing another installment, announcing back in 2024 that a new Matrix film was moving forward under a notably different creative direction than any previous entry.

A new ‘The Matrix’ film has been officially confirmed as part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s massive new movie slate reveal, continuing the studio’s plans for a franchise that first redefined the sci-fi genre back in 1999. The confirmation places the long-gestating project alongside a wave of other major announcements, including Jim Carrey’s live-action ‘Jetsons’ movie and Matt Reeves’ new Batman sequel, which is currently filming ahead of its February 2028 release.

What makes this fifth installment different from every Matrix film before it is the absence of Lana and Lilly Wachowski in the director’s chair. Drew Goddard, known for ‘The Cabin in the Woods’ and his Oscar-nominated screenplay for ‘The Martian’, has been tapped to write and direct the new film, marking the first time the franchise has moved forward without either Wachowski sister leading production. Lana Wachowski remains attached as an executive producer, preserving some direct creative continuity even as the reins pass to a new filmmaker.

Warner Bros. Motion Pictures president of production Jesse Ehrman framed Goddard’s involvement as a genuine passion project rather than a studio mandate when the film was first announced, explaining that Goddard approached the studio with an idea the team believed could authentically extend the world the Wachowskis built over 25 years. Goddard has echoed that sentiment himself, previously stating that the Matrix films changed both cinema and his own life personally.

Plot details for the new film remain tightly under wraps, with Warner Bros. previously indicating only that the story would advance the franchise’s world without straying too far from what made the original trilogy successful. Casting also remains unconfirmed, with neither Keanu Reeves nor Carrie-Anne Moss officially attached to reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity, though Reeves has previously indicated he’d be open to returning under one key condition: that Lana Wachowski personally invites him back into the franchise.

In a recent interview with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley, Goddard offered a brief update on the project’s status, confirming it remains actively in development. He said, “Still in the works. I’m in my writing cave writing. I don’t know how long I’ll be in that writing cave, but whenever I come out, I’ll have news to share.” That comment suggests the script is still being shaped, with no firm release date yet locked in for the project.

Given how ‘Resurrections’ performed both critically and commercially, holding a 63% score on Rotten Tomatoes and falling well short of recovering its budget, there’s likely considerable pressure on Goddard’s team to get this next chapter right. With Warner Bros. now formally reaffirming the project’s place in its long-term slate alongside other major franchise bets, the studio appears fully committed to seeing this fifth Matrix film through to release, even without a confirmed timeline just yet.

With Goddard still deep in the writing process and no casting news on the horizon, fans will likely need to stay patient a while longer before getting a real look at what this new chapter has in store.
