The Marvel Cinematic Universe is taking a slower pace over the next few years when it comes to new movies. The next films set to hit theaters are Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 31, Doomsday in December, and then Avengers: Secret Wars in December 2027.

But in between those releases, there’s also a “secret” Marvel movie set for July 23, 2027. Sources say it won’t be an X-Men film. With only a few projects in development that we know of, it’s likely the mystery movie could be a sequel to Shang-Chi, Black Panther 3, or Doctor Strange 3, with Doctor Strange 3 being the most likely candidate.

By the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Stephen Strange and Clea set out on a mission to learn everything they can about incursions. Their journey will likely lead them to something far worse: the discovery that reality itself is falling apart. In this situation, Strange may be forced to work with an unlikely partner: Victor Von Doom.

There’s a strong chance that Strange and Doom could work together, but not for the reason most people might think. This idea lines up with stories from Marvel Comics, particularly the ones that inspired Secret Wars. Even though the upcoming movies probably won’t follow the comic books word for word, they will most likely borrow major elements from them.

In the comics, Doom’s big storyline ties into Time Runs Out and Secret Wars. When the Multiverse collapsed during the final incursion between Earth-616 and Earth-1610, Doom took the power of the Beyonders and pieced together the remains of different realities into one patchwork world called Battleworld.

He ruled it with an iron fist, but he wasn’t alone, Doctor Strange became his sheriff and right-hand man. Together, they kept control with the help of the Thor Corps, a group of enforcers loyal to Doom.

Rumors have already suggested that the Thor Corps might show up in future Avengers films. If that’s true, then it would make sense for Strange’s role to follow a similar path as in the comics. But the MCU has a challenge here: the Beyonder hasn’t appeared on screen. That means Marvel would have to replace him with someone else who can bend reality. Possible choices include Loki, Scarlet Witch, Sentry, or Franklin Richards. None of them match the Beyonder’s godlike power, but they could still fill the role for the story’s purpose.

In the comics, Doom and Strange ruled Battleworld for eight years, slowly changing the memories of its people so they wouldn’t remember the old worlds. Strange created a sanctuary called the Isle of Agamotto, a place where he kept the memory of the lost Earth alive.

Five years into Battleworld’s existence, Strange found a mysterious vessel. Inside were the preserved bodies of survivors from Earth-616, but he didn’t know their true identities at first. When another vessel arrived carrying survivors from Earth-1610, Strange investigated his own discovery, freeing people like Mr. Fantastic and Black Panther.

Once Doom learned that these heroes were free, he confronted Strange. A fight broke out between the survivors and the Thor Corps. Doom eventually stepped in when he saw Mr. Fantastic and demanded everyone accept his rule. Strange refused and used magic to teleport the heroes to safety. Doom saw this as betrayal and killed him on the spot.

That’s how it happened in the comics. In the MCU, Strange’s partnership with Doom would probably play out differently. Instead of secretly opposing Doom from the start, it might be clear that he’s only teaming up with him to stop reality from collapsing. He would never be working to help Doom take control, but the alliance would still put him in danger and it could end with his death.

In the comics, Doom was eventually beaten by Reed Richards. Franklin Richards then helped rebuild reality. Strange later returned, brought back to life by Reed, but with no memories of Battleworld. This gave him a fresh start and allowed him to continue his work as Sorcerer Supreme without the burden of his past.

This twist could work perfectly for the MCU. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has hinted at a soft reboot of the MCU and even mentioned that some big roles could be recast. Bringing Strange back with no memories after his death would be a clean way to refresh his character while still keeping him in the story. It also leaves the door open for a new actor to take on the role if Marvel decides to go in that direction.

In short, this theory fits both the comics and the rumored direction of the MCU. Strange teaming up with Doom to save reality, dying in the process, and then returning as a “new” version of himself checks all the boxes for a dramatic and game-changing storyline.

What do you think? Could this be Marvel’s plan for Doctor Strange 3 and the road to Secret Wars? Let us know in the comments.
