‘Wheel of Fortune’ Announcer Jim Thornton Suspended After Mysterious Flight Incident, Role Being Recast

Game show announcers rarely make headlines outside the studio, quietly delivering prizes and puzzle reveals from behind the scenes while hosts take the spotlight. That’s exactly what made Jim Thornton such a familiar constant on ‘Wheel of Fortune,’ a voice fans have heard night after night since long before Ryan Seacrest ever took over hosting duties.

Thornton has held that announcing role since 2011, later expanding to ‘Celebrity Wheel of Fortune’ when that companion series launched in 2021. Beyond the show, he’s also been a recognizable presence in Los Angeles media for decades, having worked as an afternoon anchor and, even earlier, as a traffic reporter dating back to 1985.

That steady tenure has now come to an abrupt and uncertain halt. Sony Pictures Television has suspended ‘Wheel of Fortune’ announcer Jim Thornton and is recasting his role, a decision the studio confirmed followed an alleged incident involving Thornton on a commercial flight back in May.

Details surrounding the incident remain limited, but according to TMZ, which was first to report the story, a passenger raised concerns to a flight attendant about Thornton during the American Airlines flight. TMZ further reported that the situation escalated enough that the pilot called ahead to have law enforcement waiting to meet Thornton once the flight landed.

American Airlines confirmed to Deadline that its Flight 1276 was indeed met by law enforcement upon arrival at Los Angeles International Airport on May 14, though the airline did not name Thornton specifically in its statement. TMZ additionally reported that officers questioned Thornton, who was reportedly wearing a ‘Wheel of Fortune’-branded jacket at the time, before he was ultimately released without further incident at that point.

Sony Pictures Television confirmed the suspension in a statement, saying the studio recently became aware of allegations concerning Thornton, adding that he has been suspended from ‘Wheel of Fortune’ while the studio conducts a thorough investigation. According to Deadline, the recasting is understood to be temporary for now as that investigation continues.

The suspension marks an unexpected disruption for a broadcaster who has spent over a decade as a steady, largely uncontroversial presence on one of television’s longest-running game shows. Thornton’s role on ‘Wheel of Fortune’ has always operated somewhat behind the curtain compared to the show’s hosts, first alongside Pat Sajak and Vanna White and more recently with Seacrest, who took over hosting duties following Sajak’s retirement.

Neither Sony Pictures Television nor Thornton has released additional details about the specific nature of the allegations under investigation. With the studio actively working through that process, questions remain about whether Thornton’s suspension will ultimately prove temporary or lead to a more permanent departure from the franchise he’s been associated with for well over a decade.

For now, ‘Wheel of Fortune’ will continue production with a recast announcer standing in for Thornton while Sony completes its review. Fans tuning in over the coming weeks will notice a different voice calling out prizes, at least until the investigation into what actually happened on that May flight reaches its conclusion.
