Who Is Synapse in ‘The Boys’ Episode 7? Butcher’s Mysterious Figure Shakes Things Up Before the Finale
Episode 7 of The Boys Season 5 introduces one of the most unsettling new Supes in the series, a psychic named Synapse. His arrival changes the tone of the episode, especially for Billy Butcher, who is forced to deal with both external danger and his own collapsing mental state.
The episode shows Homelander calling in a group of powerful psychics to help strengthen his control. Synapse is part of this group and is described as one of the most dangerous telepaths available. He has the ability to move through mental spaces, access memories, and interfere directly with a person’s mind. This makes him a serious threat to both Supes and non-Supes.
Synapse’s main target in the episode becomes Butcher. During a mission involving the Boys, Synapse kidnaps both Butcher and Hughie. Instead of using physical force, he pulls Butcher into a psychic confrontation inside his own mind. There, Synapse begins breaking down Butcher’s memories and using them as weapons against him.
This mental attack also temporarily weakens Butcher’s abilities. While inside his head, Synapse digs through layers of trauma and guilt, exposing moments Butcher has tried to suppress. The experience becomes deeply personal and destabilizing, turning Butcher’s own mind into the battlefield.
One of the most important elements of this psychic sequence is the return of Joe Kessler. Previously, the series revealed that Kessler, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, was not physically real in earlier appearances but instead a hallucination created by Butcher’s deteriorating mind. In this episode, Synapse uses that same psychological weakness to bring Kessler back as a mental construct.
Inside the hallucination, Hughie is also shown fragments of Butcher’s past. These include flashbacks to a failed military mission in Afghanistan, where Butcher and Kessler served together. The mission ended in disaster, with multiple deaths, and it is suggested that Butcher’s decisions played a major role in what happened. These memories deepen the idea that Butcher’s mindset has always been shaped by guilt and violence.
The episode uses these visions to highlight a central theme of the series. Butcher is constantly torn between revenge and responsibility, and Synapse becomes the tool that forces him to face that conflict directly. The return of Kessler in this form is not just for shock value but to reinforce Butcher’s internal struggle and his pattern of choosing destruction over restraint.
As the psychic battle intensifies, Butcher and Hughie eventually find a way to fight back. They turn Synapse’s own abilities against him by pushing him into his own memories. This shift allows Butcher to regain control. Using his powers, he attacks Synapse from within the psychic space, overpowering him in a brutal conclusion to the mental confrontation.
Synapse is ultimately defeated after being overwhelmed by his own psychological exposure. His death also prevents Homelander from fully using the information he had gathered, but the damage he causes lingers in Butcher’s mind.
By the end of the episode, Synapse serves a dual purpose. He is both a major new threat introduced before the finale and a narrative device used to push Butcher deeper into his own trauma. His presence brings back key emotional threads, especially the memory of Joe Kessler, and forces Butcher closer to a breaking point as the series moves toward its final episodes.
