When Peter Jackson began work on The Lord of the Rings, Kate Winslet was already one of the most sought-after young stars in Hollywood.

She had worked with Jackson before on Heavenly Creatures, but by the late 1990s she had become an Oscar-nominated actress with a wide range of offers on the table.

Speaking with Zoe Ball, Winslet explained, “There was a lot of stuff that was coming over. It was amazing really, and I just couldn’t believe that I was suddenly in this position where I had to choose what film I did. It’s rare for an actor to feel that, but certainly for a British actor.”

Jackson wanted Winslet to play Eowyn, the brave daughter of King Théoden who takes up arms in the war against Sauron. But the role came with a major condition. The cast had to relocate to New Zealand for around three years while filming all three movies. For Winslet, who had just gotten married and was building her personal life, that was simply too much to take on.

Michael De Luca, then president of New Line Cinema, revealed what her agent had told him at the time: “Winslet’s unavailable, I’m afraid. I think she passed on the project due to the length of time it takes.” In other words, the huge commitment was the main reason she turned it down.

Instead of heading to New Zealand, Winslet chose projects that allowed her to explore different roles. In the early 2000s she appeared in Quills, Iris, and Enigma, three very different films that gave her the chance to show her acting range. Some believe she may have been less drawn to a sword-wielding fantasy role and more interested in challenging dramas that suited her strengths at the time.

Still, it’s interesting to think what might have happened if she had joined the cast of The Lord of the Rings.

The trilogy became a worldwide phenomenon, winning 17 Academy Awards from 30 nominations, and setting records in Hollywood history. The Return of the King swept the Oscars in every category it was nominated for, tying with Titanic and Ben-Hur for the most wins ever.

Turning down the role didn’t slow Winslet down. Today, she is one of Britain’s most respected talents, with an Oscar, three BAFTAs, and five Golden Globes to her name. Her career path shows that even when she said no to Middle-earth, she still found her own way to the top.
