Fans have been asking what happened to OA on ‘FBI‘ for a while now, and the answer has changed a lot over the past few seasons. What began as a puzzling absence from a few episodes turned into one of the biggest twists the long running CBS procedural has pulled off.

Special Agent Omar Adom “OA” Zidan, played by Zeeko Zaki, has been part of the series since its inception in 2018. That makes his sudden exit from the team in the Season 8 finale feel even more jarring, and it sent viewers scrambling for answers about whether the fan favorite was gone for good.

Why OA Was Missingfrom ‘FBI’ Episodes

The first wave of worry came during Season 7, when OA seemed to disappear, leaving fans wondering what happened to him and whether this marks Zeeko’s exit from the show. At the time there was nothing dramatic behind it. Both OA and Special Agent in Charge Isobel Castille were missing in Season 7, Episode 12, “Manhunt,” and the absences were believed to be tied to budget cuts that reduced the number of episodes actors filmed each season.

That explanation was a practical one rather than a story twist. OA made his return in Episode 13 and later in Episode 14, titled “Hitched.” Fans who feared the worst got their favorite agent back in action fairly quickly, and CBS had already signaled long term confidence in the show. ‘FBI’ was given a three year renewal order from CBS in April 2024, covering Seasons 7, 8 and 9.

How OA Got Fired in the Season Finale

The real shock arrived with the Season 8 finale, titled “Defector.” OA and Maggie were told to act like the bus incident never even happened, which angered OA so much that he lashed out at ADIC Lawrence Green and called him “a disgrace to the bureau.” Green responded by firing OA, effective immediately.

The firing had a serious trigger behind it. OA pushed back against orders to move on from the shady Anna Vorpe and her team, who took the serum that would have saved a bus full of passengers exposed to a deadly biochemical. Watching OA say his goodbyes to the team felt abrupt and unfair, which was exactly the point.

The last scene flipped everything. The finale reveals that Maggie and Isobel planned this so that OA could go undercover in Anna’s strike team. Only Maggie and Isobel knew what was really going on, and the others were expected to be read in by the Season 9 premiere.

Inside the OA Undercover Assignment

So where has OA been since then? In an interview with TV Insider, Zaki explained that three months have passed since the end of last season, and OA has been undercover and completely disconnected from his team that entire time. That isolation sits at the heart of the new storyline.

Zaki has also talked about what the job means for his character. He said he is “hoping to pretend, maybe, to be a bad guy for a little while,” and described it as something new to play with. It is a notable shift for an agent whose moral compass has long defined him.

The assignment is not designed to be a quick detour. Zaki confirmed it lasts more than one episode. Showrunner Mike Weiss says OA will eventually return to the team changed by his experiences, and it will be up to Maggie, Scola, Eva and everyone else to help him get back to the person and the agent he was before.

Zeeko Zaki’s Future and Maggie’s New Partner

Anyone worried that Zaki is quietly leaving the show can relax. After the finale, Weiss confirmed that Zaki wasn’t going anywhere, but said fans might see him standing in some different rooms at the beginning of Season 9. The rumors of an exit turned out to be a clever misdirection rather than a real departure.

The shake up does leave a hole in the team. Maggie Bell will have a new partner in Isaiah Green, played by Chicago Med’s Roland Buck III, while OA remains undercover. CBS teases that Maggie struggles to bond with her new partner while OA adjusts to a new role.

The season also kicked off with a crossover. ‘FBI’ Season 9 premiered on Monday, October 5, and CIA Deputy Chief of Station Nikki Reynard appears in the premiere to help with an investigation. Zaki says Maggie is definitely struggling without OA. The partnership fans love is clearly being tested, but it appears to be on hold rather than broken.

So what really happened to OA on ‘FBI’ is a story about a fake firing, a risky double life and a partnership under pressure. With Maggie working beside a new agent and OA walking a dangerous line in Anna’s world, do you think he can come home unchanged, or will the partner who returns be someone Maggie barely recognizes?
