Why the Director Nearly Removed Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron’s Steamy 18+ Scene
Nicole Kidman has never been afraid to take on unusual roles, but one scene from the 2012 thriller “The Paperboy” almost disappeared before audiences ever got to see it. According to comments from director Lee Daniels and later interviews with Kidman, the actress convinced him not to remove one of the movie’s most talked-about moments during editing.
The scene shows Kidman’s character, Charlotte Bless, helping Zac Efron’s character, Jack Jansen, after he is stung by a jellyfish while swimming. To ease his pain, Charlotte urinates on him in front of other beachgoers. The moment quickly became one of the most discussed scenes in the film and remains one of the reasons people still talk about “The Paperboy” today.
According to Lee Daniels, he started having second thoughts while editing the movie. Even though he believed the scene worked during filming, he later felt it might be too much for audiences, especially ahead of the film’s premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. He considered cutting it from the final version.
Nicole Kidman did not agree. As she later explained, the scene had always been part of the script, and Daniels had wanted it in the movie from the beginning. She reminded the director that he should stand behind the creative decisions he had already made. After their conversation, Daniels decided to keep the scene, and it remained in the final cut shown in Cannes.
Kidman later spoke about the controversial moment in interviews, saying she never questioned filming it because it served the story. She also praised Zac Efron, explaining that she always felt comfortable working with him. The actress admitted she was surprised by how quickly the scene spread online after the movie’s release and how much attention it received from audiences.
“The Paperboy” gave Kidman the chance to play a character very different from the roles she was usually known for. To become Charlotte Bless, she changed her appearance, voice, and body language. The character was bold, unpredictable, and emotionally complicated, making it one of the actress’s most dramatic transformations.
Kidman has built a career by fully committing to demanding roles. According to reports about her work on “The Hours,” she even practiced writing with her right hand, despite being left-handed, while preparing to play Virginia Woolf, a performance that earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress. Years later, she once again transformed herself for “Being the Ricardos,” receiving another Oscar nomination for portraying television icon Lucille Ball.

While the controversial jellyfish scene became the movie’s biggest talking point, Zac Efron later revealed that another sequence was actually more uncomfortable to film. Speaking with Zendaya during a BuzzFeed interview in 2017, Efron explained that one intimate scene was largely improvised, with Daniels allowing the cameras to keep rolling. He admitted he wasn’t sure when the scene was supposed to end, describing the experience as unusual, but also said working with Kidman was unforgettable.
Although “The Paperboy” divided critics after its release, Kidman’s performance received strong praise. According to awards records, she earned Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for playing Charlotte Bless. More than a decade later, the film is still remembered largely because of her fearless performance and the scene that almost never made it into theaters.
