Why Was Criston Cole Carrying a Handkerchief? ‘House of the Dragon’ Detail Explained

‘House of the Dragon’ has never needed grand gestures to break its audience; sometimes, all it takes is a small object carried quietly through several episodes. That has certainly been true for Ser Criston Cole, whose season three arc has been defined as much by what he holds onto as by the battles he fights.

Cole spent years being one of the most reviled figures in the entire franchise, a knight whose choices repeatedly tipped the realm further toward war. Yet even as his actions grew more ruthless, one small detail kept resurfacing around him, tucked away in his sleeve through every march and skirmish.

That detail is a handkerchief, given to him by Alicent Hightower, and it has quietly followed Cole through nearly the entire back half of the show. The item first appeared back in season two, episode three, titled ‘The Burning Mill’, during a scene where Alicent says goodbye to Cole before he marches off to war.

At that point, Alicent and Cole had been carrying on a secret affair following the death of her husband, King Viserys. Their relationship was already fraying, since Alicent had grown disillusioned with Cole after he second guessed her during a Small Council meeting, but she still offered him a token before he departed.

Cole specifically asked for her favor, so that he could carry her blessing with him into battle, and Alicent responded by giving him a handkerchief embroidered with the letter A in an ornate script. The two never saw each other in person again after that goodbye, yet Cole kept the handkerchief with him through every campaign that followed.

The object resurfaced in a major way during season three, episode six, when Cole and his men march toward Harrenhal with Gwayne Hightower at his side. Gwayne spots the handkerchief and accuses Cole of breaking his Kingsguard vows over it, a moment that pushes Cole to admit regret over the choices that brought him to this point.

That regret comes to a head in the episode’s opening minutes, when Cole and his remaining men are ambushed by the Black army in the sequence known as the Butcher’s Ball. Surrounded and outnumbered, Cole pulls the handkerchief from his sleeve one final time, rubs the embroidery, and wraps it around the hilt of his sword before challenging his enemies to a duel.

The gesture becomes his last act before he is struck down by a hail of arrows, and the handkerchief remains in his grip as he dies, a final tether to the one relationship that seemed to matter most to him. According to Fabien Frankel, the actor who plays Cole, that emotional priority was very intentional on his part heading into the character’s final stretch.

Frankel explained to Variety that it felt inevitable for both Alicent and Rhaenyra to remain on Cole’s mind throughout the war, though he believed Alicent occupied far more of that space than Rhaenyra ever did, adding that Rhaenyra had become something of an afterthought and that winning the war had really become about Alicent for Cole. That insight reframes the handkerchief as more than a prop, turning it into the clearest window into what Cole was actually fighting for in his final days.

It also adds a layer of tragedy to his death, since Alicent remains completely unaware of his fate throughout the episode, trapped inside the Red Keep and cut off from any news of the war. The handkerchief becomes the only piece of that unfinished relationship that survives him, even if Alicent herself never learns just how much it meant.

For a character defined by cruelty and self-justification, the handkerchief offered a rare glimpse of vulnerability, one that the show clearly wanted audiences to notice right up until his final breath.
