‘Wicked: For Good’ Eyes This 2025 Box Office Record
The musical blockbuster “Wicked: For Good” is set to hit theaters this weekend, and industry experts are predicting a massive opening.
Fans of the Broadway hit can expect the story of Elphaba and Glinda to conclude on the big screen, with early estimates showing the film could earn between $150 million and $180 million from 4,000 theaters in North America.
A strong debut at the top of that range would make it the biggest opening of 2025 so far, beating April’s “A Minecraft Movie” ($162 million) and May’s “Lilo & Stitch” remake ($146 million). The first Wicked film made $112.5 million over the same pre-Thanksgiving weekend, setting a record for stage-to-screen adaptations.
Universal, the studio behind the film, is projecting $125 million or more for the sequel. “Projections for the first film were lofty — with some exhibitors suggesting above $130 million — before ticket sales floated to a still-spectacular $112.5 million,” sources say.
Analysts are confident about the new film because audiences already know the story, and “For Good” promises to wrap up the journey of the two main characters. The film is expected to dominate the domestic box office, even as two other new releases try to offer different options. Sony’s action thriller “Sisu: Road to Revenge” is estimated to earn around $3 million from 2,100 theaters, similar to the 2022 original.
Meanwhile, Searchlight’s dramedy “Rental Family,” starring Brendan Fraser as an actor taking stand-in jobs in Japan, is targeting a debut in the low single digits from 1,900 theaters.
With a strong fan base and a proven formula, Wicked: For Good is positioned to be one of the biggest hits of the year and could break records for musical adaptations on the big screen.
