The official Starz description notes the series begins on the night Duke Kilroy becomes world heavyweight champion, only for a vicious assault to leave his brother Calvin dead, sending Duke into an eight year prison stint in the United States.

Upon his release, and after making a sinister discovery, Duke returns home seeking vengeance against the man he believes set him up, criminal kingpin and former promoter Kingsley Marshall. That premise gave the show plenty of runway for the kind of family betrayal storylines that paid off in the finale.

Critically, the show has been a mixed bag but far from a flop. On Rotten Tomatoes, 69 percent of 16 critics’ reviews are positive, with an average rating of 5.4 out of 10, while Metacritic assigned the series a score of 58 out of 100 based on 7 critics, indicating mixed or average reviews.

What Could a ‘Fightland’ Season 2 Story Look Like*

If Starz does move forward, the show has no shortage of material to mine. ‘Fightland’ was created by Daniel Fajemisin-Duncan, Marlon Smith, Damione Macedon and Raphael Jackson Jr., with Macedon and Jackson Jr. serving as showrunners, and it was filmed on location in Newham, East London, including at Peacock’s Gym.
