Few Hollywood relationships have played out quite as publicly, or endured quite as many chapters, as the one between Hayden Panettiere and Wladimir Klitschko. The actress and the former heavyweight boxing champion spent nearly a decade intertwined in each other’s lives, weathering breakups, reconciliations, and eventually co-parenting their daughter together long after their romance ended.

That history has taken on new weight this week following Panettiere’s sudden death at age 36. She was found unresponsive Sunday at a home in Greenville, South Carolina, and pronounced dead at the scene, with the Greenville County Coroner’s Office confirming that an autopsy conducted Monday found no signs of trauma. The cause of death remains pending further investigation, though officials have said there are no indications of foul play.

Klitschko, who shares daughter Kaya with Panettiere, broke his silence on her passing early Tuesday in a heartfelt tribute posted to Instagram. The statement marked his first public comments since news of her death began circulating, and it offered a rare, deeply personal look at how the loss has affected their family.

“Our family is going through a time of profound shock and grief,” Klitschk wrote. “The announcement of Hayden’s tragic death saddens me deeply. She left this world far too soon. Hayden was, although no longer my partner, an important part of my life and the mother of our daughter, Kaya.”

Klitschko continued his tribute by honoring Panettiere’s career, describing her as someone who built an incredible path through immense talent while also facing the darker sides of a demanding industry. He promised that nothing would erase the memories they shared, and vowed to always speak of Panettiere with respect when talking to Kaya, ensuring their daughter grows up remembering who her mother truly was.

That commitment reflects the complicated but caring relationship the two maintained long after their romance ended. Panettiere and Klitschko began dating in 2009, split briefly in 2011, later reconciled and became engaged in 2013, and welcomed Kaya in December 2014 before ultimately separating again in 2018.

Despite the breakup, Panettiere made clear earlier this year that the bond between them had remained strong. Speaking to Us Weekly in an interview published in May, she credited Klitschko directly, saying she felt grateful for their continued closeness and the deep friendship the two had built even after their romantic relationship ended.

Their history includes painful moments as well. Panettiere has spoken candidly in past interviews, including a 2022 appearance on Red Table Talk, about the period when Kaya moved to Ukraine to live with Klitschko full-time while Panettiere worked through postpartum depression and addiction. She detailed much of that journey further in her memoir, ‘This Is Me: A Reckoning,’ published just months before her death.

In an eerie coincidence, Klitschko had shared an unrelated message about resilience on social media hours before news of Panettiere’s death became public, a post that fans later returned to and filled with condolences once the news broke.

Tributes for Panettiere have continued pouring in from across the entertainment industry in the days since her passing, with colleagues and friends remembering both her talent and her openness about the struggles she faced throughout her life. As investigators continue working to determine an official cause of death, Klitschko’s tribute stands as one of the more personal reflections yet on the loss the family is now processing together.
