Woody Harrelson Reveals How He Learned His Dad May Have Hooked up with Matthew McConaughey’s Mom

Hollywood friendships rarely get stranger than the one between Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, a bond that’s spanned nearly three decades and multiple film collaborations, from ‘EDtv’ to ‘True Detective.’ Their chemistry has always felt a little uncanny, right down to their near-identical mannerisms and matching Texas drawls, which fans have joked about online for years.

That resemblance took a genuinely unexpected turn back in 2023, when the two actors first floated the idea that they might actually be blood relatives rather than just longtime friends. What started as a half-joking theory has continued gaining traction ever since, fueled by a string of increasingly specific family details neither actor seems eager to fully confirm or deny.

Now Harrelson is revealing exactly how he first learned about the possible connection between his late father and McConaughey’s mother. Speaking with Variety in an interview published Aug. 21, Harrelson explained that Mary Kathlene McConaughey, whom he’s known for more than twenty-five years and affectionately calls “MaMac,” once told him, “I knew your father,” pausing deliberately after the word “knew.”

He admitted the moment initially struck him as odd, given that she’d never brought it up in over two decades of friendship.

Harrelson noted that MaMac was “feeling good” at the time thanks to some Kendall-Jackson wine, which may have loosened her tongue enough to let the story slip out. He said the comment immediately raised questions in his mind about what exactly was behind it, and that he eventually discovered his father and McConaughey’s mother weren’t simply friends after all, hinting there was “a little more to it” than a casual acquaintance.

The revelation builds on a story McConaughey first shared publicly a few years earlier. During an appearance on Kelly Ripa’s “Let’s Talk Off Camera” podcast, McConaughey recalled a family trip to Greece where his mother made a similarly loaded comment directly to Harrelson, telling him she “knew” his father with an unmistakable emphasis on the word.

According to McConaughey, the timing lines up in an unsettling way. He explained that Harrelson’s father, Charles Harrelson, was reportedly on leave around the same period his own parents were going through the second of their three divorces from one another, a window that would roughly coincide with McConaughey’s conception in 1969. McConaughey has also pointed to a separate detail his mother once shared, claiming his father told her upon his birth that “that ain’t my son” and refused to accompany her to the hospital.

Despite years of speculation and plenty of public banter between the two friends, neither Harrelson nor McConaughey has actually taken a DNA test to settle the question once and for all. The mystery has become something of a running bit between them, one that’s now bleeding directly into their professional work together, with the pair set to star in an Apple TV+ comedy series originally titled “Brother From Another Mother,” reportedly now called “Brothers,” playing fictionalized versions of themselves navigating a blended family story that McConaughey has described as “based on truth.”

Whether the two actors ever actually take that DNA test remains to be seen, but given how much mileage they’ve already gotten out of the story publicly, it’s fair to wonder if some mysteries are simply more fun left unsolved.
