Woody Harrelson Says He Has “Definite Confirmation” His Dad Had an Affair With Matthew McConaughey’s Mom

Few Hollywood friendships come with as much built-in mythology as the Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey half-brother theory. What started as an offhand moment on a family vacation has snowballed into talk-show bits, a running joke between the two actors and, eventually, an entire television series.

The story traces back to a trip to Greece, where McConaughey’s mother, Kay, told Harrelson she had known his father, Charles Harrelson. Everyone at the table reportedly noticed the loaded pause she left around that word. Charles was a convicted hitman, a detail that makes the whole thing feel like something out of the ‘True Detective’ universe the two stars once shared.

The latest twist came this week, when Harrelson told the hosts of the ‘New Heights’ podcast, Travis and Jason Kelce, that he has definitive confirmation his father and McConaughey’s mother were romantically involved. TMZ reported that the two actors were on the show to promote their new Apple TV+ series ‘Brothers,’ which premiered Wednesday. According to that report, Harrelson did not reveal what the confirmation actually is, leaving the Kelce brothers and everyone else hanging.

That tease fits the pattern. Harrelson has been the more convinced of the pair from the start, while McConaughey has consistently held back from a genetic test. The report notes that McConaughey has always avoided taking one.

McConaughey laid out the original case on Kelly Ripa’s ‘Let’s Talk Off Camera’ podcast. He said the family worked out that Charles Harrelson was on furlough at the same time McConaughey’s parents were going through their second divorce. He also mentioned possible traces of a gathering or meeting in West Texas around that period.

Harrelson later brought his own detail to Esquire in 2023. He claimed McConaughey’s father refused to go to the hospital when McConaughey was born in 1969, telling his wife the baby was not his. Harrelson said he knew about that detail years before Kay hinted at anything.

Harrelson has been open about wanting a DNA test. On ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,’ he said he sees it as a chance to gain a different father and a brother. McConaughey, by contrast, admitted it is a much bigger deal for him, since it could mean questioning the man he believed was his dad for more than 50 years.

Not everyone has been shy about volunteering to settle it. Former talk show host Maury Povich publicly offered to come out of retirement to administer the test, an offer McConaughey received with good humor while stopping short of accepting it.

Earlier this year, Harrelson also told Variety at the Sarajevo Film Festival that Kay eventually admitted she and his father were more than friends. He said the admission came after he had known her for 25 years, which struck him as odd. At the same Emmys appearance where the two presented the final award together, The Hollywood Reporter noted that McConaughey’s reluctance stems from having too much to unpack about his own family.

That standoff became the seed for ‘Brothers,’ a semi-scripted comedy from writer-producer Lee Eisenberg. Both actors play fictionalized versions of themselves and also serve as creators and executive producers. The series follows the pair after a similar family secret erupts at a Texas ranch, per The Mac Observer, though it does not settle the real-life question of their biology.

McConaughey has said he was skeptical from the outset, while Harrelson believed the theory right away. That contrast is exactly the tension the show mines for laughs, and it helps explain why audiences have embraced the premise.

The two men already share a long history. They first appeared in a movie together in ‘EDtv’ in 1999, and their families have long blurred the lines between friend and relative. Their kids call each other’s fathers uncle, and relatives on both sides reportedly mistake photos of one actor for the other.

As of now, no public DNA result proves the two share a father, and Harrelson’s mystery evidence remains just that. Even so, McConaughey has said he considers Harrelson his brother either way, which may be the most telling part of the saga.

Whether Harrelson ever reveals what he knows or the test finally happens, the timing is hard to ignore. With ‘Brothers’ now streaming, the actors have turned an unresolved family mystery into their biggest promotional hook.
