Netflix’s true crime slate just got a terrifying new entry, and the streamer’s latest docuseries is already sending chills down viewers’ spines. Worst Neighbor Ever dedicates its first episode to Frances Zaayer and how her harassment of the family next door resulted in murder. The series is the latest instalment in Netflix’s ‘Worst Ever’ franchise, following on from the hugely successful ‘Worst Roommate Ever’ and ‘Worst Ex Ever’.

The ‘Worst Ever’ true crime docuseries franchise from Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions is back with a spin off about the people who live next door, with director Cynthia Childs returning to helm all four episodes. The Frances Zaayer story kicks things off, and it is every bit as disturbing as fans of the franchise have come to expect.

Frances Zaayer’s Harassment Of The Scott Family

The first episode, titled She Finally Snapped, follows Shawna and David Scott, a happily married couple living in the small community of Mount Sterling, Kentucky. Zaayer was a longtime friend of David and his wife, and had actually moved in with the family while her house in the same residential complex was undergoing renovations.

Frances was getting a divorce and had been living away for a period of time, but decided to come home to be near friends again when her marriage broke down. She bought the house next door to Shawna and Dave, and asked if she could live with the couple while she renovated her new home, and Shawna agreed because they had known Frances for a long time.

What begins as a fun rekindling of a teenage friendship turns sour when Frances’s odd and controlling behavior escalates into what Shawna says is racially motivated violence that tears her family apart. Everyday quarrels spiralled into harassment, intimidation, and deadly violence, and Shawna has since revealed that it hadn’t taken David long to pick up on Zaayer’s disturbing behavior before his death.

The situation reached a boiling point after a disputed altercation between the two women, and from there, things only got worse for the Scott family living beside their once trusted friend.

The Shooting That Shocked Mount Sterling

Police were forced to drop Frances’s assault case against Shawna because of a lack of evidence, which caused Frances to become enraged that Shawna was not going to be charged. Zaayer had also claimed that Shawna assaulted her in 2017, leading to Shawna’s arrest, though she was later released after little evidence of a fight was found, and told to remain 500 meters from her neighbor at all times.

In truly disturbing scenes, Frances arrived at her neighbor’s house with a gun and shot Shawna in the face, with the bullet entering through her nose and exiting the side of her head. She survived but was left blind in one eye and deaf in one ear, and required 16 surgeries.

Frances also fatally shot deputy jailer Dave in the chest, killing him at the age of 47, and Shawna tragically discovered he had died only after she woke from her coma. Zaayer had used one bullet to break every bone in Shawna’s face before turning the gun on David.

Shawna has since described the ordeal in harrowing detail, recalling the injuries that changed her life forever. She said, “I suffered the loss of my sight in my left eye, the loss of the hearing in my left ear, scars on my face, just a lot of surgeries and a lot of healing”.

Frances Zaayer Sentencing And Prison Update

Frances Zaayer remains in prison after she was sentenced to a 35 year term for pleading guilty to murder, second degree assault, and first degree wanton endangerment. Police arrested Frances Zaayer, 51 years old at the time, at the scene of the crime, and there was enough evidence to prosecute her.

She will not be eligible for parole until 2038. Shawna has made her feelings about that possibility painfully clear in the documentary.

Shawna revealed, “It’s my biggest fear for Frances to be paroled. My fear for my kids, my family. Honestly, I hope she never gets out. There’s still a fear that’s in the back of my head every day”. Her words capture the lingering trauma that has followed the family long after the trial concluded.

Shawna And Haley Speak Out In The Documentary

Shawna’s daughter Haley features prominently in the documentary, and Dave had been her devoted stepfather since she was two years old. At Frances’s sentencing, Haley delivered a powerful statement, saying, “You deserve so much more than the sentence you are receiving today. But it’s at least a good start for taking the life of a proud father, grandfather, adoring husband, and a pillar of this community”.

She continued, “I know families of the victims often end their statements with ‘I forgive you,’ or ‘I need to forgive you to move on.’ But I want to make myself very clear. I do not forgive you, I don’t want to forgive you, and I’m never going to forgive you”. It is a gut punch of a moment that has already stuck with early viewers of the series.

‘Worst Neighbor Ever’ uses eyewitness testimonials, body cam footage, and animated reenactments rather than dramatized actors, a formula that has worked well across the franchise’s previous installments. All four episodes of season one are now available to stream in full.

Frances Zaayer’s story is a sobering reminder that the people we trust most can sometimes turn into the very threat we never see coming, and after watching Shawna and Haley relive that nightmare on screen, what part of this case left you the most shaken.
