X-Men ‘97 Boss Brad Winderbaum Confirms the Mutant Saga Isn’t Slowing Down Anytime Soon

Animated revivals rarely recapture lightning in a bottle the way ‘X-Men ’97’ has. What started as a nostalgia play for ’90s kids who grew up glued to Saturday morning cartoons has evolved into one of Marvel Animation’s most critically praised undertakings, blending old-school mutant drama with modern storytelling ambition. Fans have spent months anxiously counting down episodes, desperate to know how far this creative renaissance will extend.

The second season has been a rollercoaster of time-displaced heroes, shifting alliances, and mounting stakes as the X-Men scattered across different eras try to find their way home. With the season barreling toward its climax, questions about the show’s long-term future have only intensified among the fandom, especially as Marvel continues expanding its animated slate.

Now, at a special screening of Season 2’s final two episodes, Marvel Studios’ Head of Television and Animation, Brad Winderbaum, addressed exactly what lies ahead. Winderbaum used the gathering, attended by cast members of the series, to tease not just the completion of Season 3, but active development on both Season 4 and Season 5 as well.

The update builds on comments Winderbaum has made throughout the year regarding the franchise’s trajectory. During a recent panel, the Marvel TV head confirmed that Season 3 is finished and ready to hit Disney+ in 2027, and the panel also revealed that Season 4 is officially in production at Marvel Animation, with four scripts already being worked on. That level of advance planning underscores just how much confidence Marvel has placed in the property’s continued success.

This isn’t the first time Winderbaum has signaled that ‘X-Men ’97’ has a long life ahead of it. Speaking previously, Winderbaum affirmed that the show will not end after Season 3, stating there is “definitely, more than possibly, more to come from ‘X-Men ’97,'” and that talks about Seasons 4 and 5 were already underway at that point. The consistency of these statements across multiple public appearances suggests Marvel’s commitment to the mutant team runs deeper than a single renewal.

There’s also been chatter suggesting the ambitions could stretch even further. An executive producer on the series has indicated that Winderbaum envisions the show potentially reaching Season 10, an aim that would significantly surpass the five-season run of the original 1990s ‘X-Men’ animated series. Given the sprawling decades of comic book mythology still untapped, that kind of longevity isn’t as far-fetched as it might initially sound.

Season 2 itself has continued the tradition of raising the emotional and narrative bar. The nine-episode season introduced a widened roster including Sabretooth, Lady Deathstrike, Colossus, Danger, Boom-Boom, and Exodus, alongside two full teams pulled directly from the comics, X-Force and X-Factor. That expansion has given the writers room to explore corners of X-Men lore that the original series never touched.

Consistency behind the camera has clearly played a role in maintaining the show’s quality since Beau DeMayo’s departure. Winderbaum has noted that the series retains the same director, same producers, same cast, and many of the same writers, standing on the shoulders of giants, with everybody rowing in exactly the same direction. That continuity appears central to why fans and critics alike have continued to embrace the show’s sophomore outing.

With Season 3 locked and ready for a 2027 release, and Seasons 4 and 5 already taking shape behind the scenes, ‘X-Men ’97’ looks positioned to become one of Marvel’s flagship animated franchises for years to come. The mutant saga that once seemed like a nostalgic one-off has instead become a cornerstone of Marvel’s future television plans.
