Marvel has finally revealed who will play Storm in the upcoming X-Men movie, and the choice came as a surprise to many fans.

Broadway actress Maya Boyd has been cast as Ororo Munroe, better known as Storm. Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige announced the news during Marvel’s D23 presentation in Anaheim on Friday night, August 15.

Boyd was not one of the names fans had been widely discussing before the announcement. For weeks, Jayme Lawson was seen by many fans as a strong choice for the role after her performance in Sinners. Then, just one day before the D23 event, scooper Jeff Sneider reported that Suzy Bemba could be in the running. In the end, Marvel went in a completely different direction.

Boyd appeared on stage with the rest of the new X-Men cast, making her official debut as Storm. Blex Media reported that she had not even been part of the main fan casting conversation before the announcement.

The reaction online was immediate. One Storm fan account, daily storm, posted after the reveal: MAYA BOYD LET US BREATHE.

The casting is a major moment for Boyd. The upcoming X-Men movie will be her first feature film role. Until now, she has mainly been known for her work on Broadway.

Boyd made her New York stage debut in Merrily We Roll Along in 2023 while she was still studying at the University of Michigan. She later appeared in Joe Turner’s Come and Gone with Taraji P. Henson before taking over the lead role in &Juliet. She performed the role eight times a week before leaving the production for her Marvel role.

She now joins a new group of actors who will bring Marvel’s mutants into the MCU. Sadie Sink will play Jean Grey, while Kit Connor has been cast as Cyclops. Christopher Abbott will play Professor Charles Xavier, Samara Weaving will appear as Emma Frost, and Inde Navarrette will play Rogue.

Adam Driver also joined the announcement through a video appearance. He will play Nathaniel Milbury, the human identity of the X-Men villain Mister Sinister.

Marvel has not revealed the full cast yet. Feige made it clear that these are only the first major casting announcements, so more characters are expected to be revealed later.

The movie is being directed by Jake Schreier, who previously directed Thunderbolts*. The script comes from Lee Sung Jin, the creator of Beef, and Joanna Calo, who worked on The Bear. Marvel currently has the film set to arrive in theaters on May 5, 2028.

There is also growing talk about when fans might first see Boyd as Storm. Sadie Sink reportedly appeared as Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day before the full X-Men cast was announced. That has led to speculation that Marvel could give Storm a similar early appearance.

Some fans have suggested Black Panther 3 as a possible place for Boyd’s first appearance, but Marvel has not confirmed anything.

Boyd’s casting has already given her social media following a huge boost. According to the report, her Instagram account gained thousands of new followers and climbed close to 100,000 shortly after the announcement.

Storm was previously played by Halle Berry in four X-Men movies between 2000 and 2014. Alexandra Shipp later played a younger version of the character in X-Men: Apocalypse and X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

Now, Marvel is handing the role to a rising Broadway performer with no major movie experience. It is a big gamble, but it could also become one of the biggest breaks of Boyd’s career.
