Marvel Animation’s take on a teenage Spider-Man managed to win over skeptical fans during its first season, despite some early hesitation about the show’s stylized art direction and its decision to swap Tony Stark for Norman Osborn as Peter’s mentor figure. By the time the season wrapped, that skepticism had largely faded, with the series earning praise for capturing the character’s scrappy comic book roots in a way few adaptations had managed before.

That freshman run wasn’t without its criticisms, though, and one complaint stuck out above the rest: a rogues’ gallery that leaned more on lesser-known names like Unicorn and Butane than on Spider-Man’s marquee villains. Season 1 largely confined its bigger threats to Scorpion, Otto Octavius, and a mysterious symbiote creature, leaving fans wanting a deeper cut from the character’s decades of comic history.

Season 2 appears designed to answer that criticism directly. According to Deadline, the upcoming season will feature a time jump for Peter Parker, pushing him into a new chapter where he faces considerably tougher enemies than anything he encountered during his freshman year at Midtown High.

Showrunner Jeff Trammell has been candid about the shift in scale between the two seasons, framing the freshman run as scene-setting rather than the main event. Speaking about the transition into the new episodes, Trammell explained that the first season was about “setting the board,” while the sophomore season finally lets the show “play the game,” a distinction that lines up with the noticeably stacked villain roster teased in early footage.

That villain roster is considerably more crowded this time around. Footage revealed at D23 confirmed the return of Doctor Octopus, Norman Osborn, and Scorpion, while introducing new threats including Rhino, The Lizard, and Eddie Brock, who many fans expect to eventually transform into Venom over the course of the season.

The Venom possibility isn’t just speculation, either. Season 1’s finale revealed that a fragment of a Venom-like symbiote creature was left behind after Peter and Doctor Strange banished the greater threat back through an interdimensional portal, a loose thread that appears primed to pay off now that Eddie Brock has officially entered the picture.

Beyond the villain expansion, Peter’s supporting cast is growing too. Gwen Stacy is set to join the series and transform into her superhero alter ego, Spider-Gwen, while Charlie Cox returns as Daredevil following his appearance during the first season, continuing the character’s growing presence across Marvel Animation’s slate.

Doctor Octopus, meanwhile, gets a new voice behind him in Hugh Dancy, joining a cast that also includes Jonathan Medina taking over as Scorpion. Both Norman and Harry Osborn are confirmed to return as well, continuing their increasingly complicated dynamic with Peter following the fallout of Season 1’s finale.

Trammell has also confirmed that the show’s writers’ outline for the sophomore season spans 56 pages of story elements, reflecting just how much more ground the new episodes are covering compared to the first run. That expanded scope required bringing on additional writers, since Trammell himself was only able to pen around two scripts this time due to his broader showrunner responsibilities.

Peter’s world is clearly growing more dangerous and more crowded all at once, and the promised time jump suggests the show is ready to let its title character mature alongside the escalating stakes. With Venom looming, Doc Ock scheming, and an entirely new circle of allies and enemies entering the picture, Season 2 looks poised to deliver exactly the kind of high-stakes rogues’ gallery fans have been asking for since the show’s debut.
