Zach Cregger Reveals His Take on ‘Resident Evil’ Film: “My Movie Will Be Built in the Spirit of Those Games”

Sony Pictures recently revealed exciting news about the upcoming Resident Evil movie reboot at CinemaCon. Zach Cregger, the director of Barbarian, is leading the project and promises a fresh take on the popular horror franchise. He says this movie will be completely different from the previous Resident Evil films.

At the event, Cregger explained what makes his version unique. “There’s a moment that comes in almost every Resident Evil game where you find yourself in a dark passageway, your health is almost zero and there’s no way around,” he said. “You have to go through but you know there’s something awful for you in the darkness.”

This feeling of fear and tension is what he wants to bring to the film. Cregger confirmed that his movie will follow a single main character on a dangerous journey from point A to point B. Along the way, things will get darker and more terrifying. “My movie will be built in the spirit of those games and follows one central protagonist from point A to point B, as they descend deeper into hell,” he added.

Several well-known production companies are working on the film, including Constantin Film, Vertigo Entertainment, and PlayStation Productions.

Fans of Resident Evil won’t have to wait too long. The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on September 18, 2026. With Cregger’s vision and commitment to horror, this could be one of the scariest Resident Evil adaptations yet.
