A new “Resident Evil” film is on the way, and it is bringing the long-running video game franchise back to theaters with a fresh creative team and a new story approach. The movie is set for release on September 18, and a trailer has already been shared ahead of its debut.

This version of “Resident Evil” is directed by Zach Cregger, a filmmaker known for his work in horror. The movie is based on the popular Capcom video game series and introduces a new main character named Bryan, played by Austin Abrams. He works as a medical courier and becomes trapped in a violent chain of events during a single night filled with chaos and danger.

The film also features Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser in supporting roles. Cregger wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten and also helped produce the project. Several producers are attached, including Robert Kulzer, Roy Lee, Miri Yoon, Carter Swan, and Asad Qizilbash, with additional executive producers involved as well.

“Resident Evil” has been adapted many times before. The franchise first reached theaters in the early 2000s with a film series that started in 2002 and continued through multiple sequels over the next decade and a half. That earlier run became one of the more recognizable video game movie adaptations.

Other versions have also been made over the years. A separate film titled “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City” was released in 2021. The franchise also expanded into streaming with an animated series and a live-action show on Netflix, though the live-action version ended after one season.

The video game series itself remains active and successful. A recent mainline entry, “Resident Evil Requiem,” launched earlier this year and was well received, showing that interest in the franchise is still strong across games and screen adaptations.

Zach Cregger’s involvement has drawn attention because of his recent success in horror. His earlier film “Weapons” performed strongly at the box office and helped raise his profile as a filmmaker in the genre.

The new “Resident Evil” movie is being released by Columbia Pictures and Constantin Film, working together with TriStar Pictures, according to studio information.

This film has a real chance to stand out because it is trying a fresh direction instead of repeating old storylines. Still, “Resident Evil” has had many adaptations before, so expectations are high and not easy to meet. It will be interesting to see if this version finally becomes the one fans connect with the most. What do you think about this new “Resident Evil” movie? Share your thoughts in the comments.
