Zayn Malik recently opened up about his past relationship with Gigi Hadid, and his comments are raising eyebrows. The former One Direction star told Call Her Daddy on February 11 that while he will always care for Gigi, he isn’t sure he was ever truly in love with her.

“To be fair, just to have this on the record, I will always love G, because she is the reason my child is on this Earth and I have the utmost respect for her,” Zayn said, referring to their daughter Khai, who is five years old. “I will always love her, but I don’t know if I was in love with her.”

The singer clarified that although he and Gigi were on-and-off for about five years, starting in 2016, his feelings at the time might not have been true love. “I do love her a crazy amount, but no, I don’t think I was in love with her at that point,” he said.

Zayn explained that he sees his younger self differently now. “Otherwise I would have been a better version of myself,” he said. He admitted that he used to believe his feelings for the supermodel were stronger than they actually were. “My understanding of love is always developing. At that moment in time, I might have thought it was love, but as I got older I realized maybe it wasn’t. Maybe it was lust. Maybe it was this, maybe it was that. I don’t feel like it was love.”

The singer, who previously dated Perrie Edwards from 2012 to 2015, also reflected on life as a single adult. He said he doesn’t find being alone scary. “No disrespect to all the past relationships I’ve been in. No disrespect at all, it was freeing. I am that type of person who runs on my own clock, answers to myself. So, it was so freeing to me. I could just do things, make plans. Sleep until any time I want.”

Zayn added that being single has taught him a lot about himself. “I tended to get in trouble in relationships, ‘cause I was young, did certain things, spoke to other females when I shouldn’t have been. You live and learn from it, but this way, there’s no guilt,” he admitted.

It’s interesting to see Zayn being so honest about his past and how he views love now. It shows a lot of self-awareness, and fans might be surprised by how he separates love from infatuation. Do you agree with Zayn’s take on his relationship with Gigi? Share your thoughts in the comments.
