Disney’s Zootopia 2 has had an incredible start at the box office, setting new records around the world.

According to Deadline Hollywood, the animated sequel pulled in $556 million globally over its five-day opening weekend, beating the previous record of $378 million held by The Super Mario Bros. Movie for the biggest extended opening weekend ever for an animated film.

In the United States and Canada, the movie earned $156 million over the five days. This makes it the second-largest Thanksgiving weekend launch of all time, behind only last year’s Moana 2, which made $225 million.

The film has been even more impressive in China. On Saturday alone, it earned $104 million, surpassing Avengers: Endgame for the highest single-day total ever for a Hollywood movie in the country. The five-day opening in China reached $272 million. Sources say the movie is on track to make over $500 million in China, and it could even challenge Endgame’s record of $632 million for the highest total ever for a Hollywood film there.

Zootopia 2, known as Zootropolis 2 in some countries, is a 2025 animated buddy cop comedy from Walt Disney Animation Studios.

The film is directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, with Bush also writing the script and Yvett Merino producing. Returning stars include Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Shakira, Idris Elba, Alan Tudyk, Nate Torrence, Don Lake, Bonnie Hunt, and Jenny Slate. New cast members joining the film include Ke Huy Quan, Fortune Feimster, Andy Samberg, David Strathairn, Patrick Warburton, Quinta Brunson, and Danny Trejo.

The story follows Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde as they investigate a new mysterious resident in Zootopia, a reptile named Gary De’Snake, while trying to clear their names.

Zootopia 2 premiered at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood on November 13, before its wide release in the United States on November 26. Critics have generally given positive reviews, and the movie has already grossed $233 million worldwide. Initial projections expected it to make over $125 million in the U.S. and Canada and $270 million globally over the five-day Thanksgiving weekend. By the end of the weekend, estimates were raised to $175 million domestically and $525 million worldwide.

In China, the film has become a massive hit. It is the first Hollywood movie to earn over $100 million in a single day in the Chinese market, surpassing Avengers: Endgame. As of November 30, it has earned $268 million in China alone.
